Internet Radio is about to take a massive hit

But what The Dude is saying is essentially true... this wouldn't have happened if the whole thing hadn't happened back in '99. At least not the way it's happening now.

See, in the minds of the RIAA, Internet radio provides another path to piracy, and wrong as that position may be ("may be" should be read "is"), they have done all they can so far to shut the medium down. I have to wonder if other groups added pressure as well, namely the NAB, hence the price being so high only the Big Boys can afford it.

Yes we are and I, like many have implemented mechanisms to thwart, disallow and make unusable ripping programs. Obviously we can't stop all but we can make it a pain to steal our stations!
 
And, I would also add that MANY of us ARE legal and licensed webcasters that do agree that
artists/musicians/songwriters should be paid for their work.

But the rates should be fair, especially for those (myself included) who lose more money than they earn.
 
did anyone watch the subcommittee on telecommunications and internet hearing? While the main topic today was about the merger of Sirius and XM, Lawmakers made comments about the royalty rate hikes today. The committee chairman, and several other congressmen commented about the subject, and disagreed toward the hike in their opening statements, feeling it being a threat to small entrepeneurships as well as the consumer losing choices in programming. Mainly lawmakers were grilling mel karmazin about the Sirius and XM merger, but I felt Rob Kimball, VP of Real Networks, had a solid defense for internet radio when testifying toward lawmakers. One topic was the importance of Localization which Kimball replied that anyone can inexpensively start their station and broadcast the local weather and so forth, while Karmazin was trying to reply to why Sirius lacks focus in announcing amber alerts. Kimball stressed very hard the impact the new royalty fees would have on webcasters, which lawmakers were very attentive and non-objective. The main issues lawmakers addressed were Diversity, consolidation, lack of an available voice in radio for minorities, and choices for the consumer.

Overall i thought today's hearing was somewhat a step in the right direction for saving internet radio, but a small step. As i webcaster, i will continue to write to my congressman and senators, and i hope you all do too as well. Let's hope for the best, and continue to fight for our passion, which is radio.

Oh and another thing, Kimball explained to lawmakers how diverse internet radio is, how one internet radio station can program classical and another station can program rockabilly. While it was a very simple statement, i thought it was well-put, and to the point that lawmakers understood and found pleasing. But like i said, let's hope for the best.

I as an internet broadcaster have worked very hard over the past five years to provide the best programming for my listeners. I have acquired many of them. I make no profit and broadcast on Live 365. It just amazes me how it seems that the greedy rich are the only ones that seem to keep going!! It is appalllng how big business contine to be the dominant force in the this country!! Internet radio provides a creative, diverse alternative to the bland radio programming heard on most terrestrial stations today. Just look at the radio dial in New York City! It's a disgrace!!! THERE IS NOTHING - ONE CLASSIC ROCK STATION - NO OLDIES-NO COUNTRY-REALLY NO LITE (LITE FM IS ALL OVER THE ROAD), NO ALTERNATIVE - NO REAL ADULT CONTEMPORARY - ONE CLASSICAL AND NOW "FRESH" WHICH OFFERS A VERY SMALL PIECE OF THE ADULT CONTEMPORARY PIE. THEY ELIMINATE ALL OF THE GOOD SONGS. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT HIS IS STRICTLY MY OPINION.

It;s really sad! In addition to the webcasters being shortchanged, the listeners will also take the hit. Are the big guys worried that they find Internet Radio a threat. Who is really behind this?? If the big guys really knew how or cared about programming, they won't feel threatened by other modes of broadcasting. This is a free country -- why is there so much control on promoting and broadcasting music? This inhibits or destroys small entreprenures. I know that the big terrestrial stations will also be affected but - they have much more revenue plus a powerful on air signal. They could keep going, the little guy can't. The FCC makes any kind of terrestrial broadcasting impossible for individuals! Since we are paying ASCAP BMI AND SESAC - I STILL REALLY DO NOT UNDERSTAND WHY AND HOW SOUNDEXCHANGE IS THE DOMINATE ROYALTY FORCE.

This whole thing sickens me - The proposed ridiculous increases will only hurt everyone involved. It really seems like they are out to destroy any kind of broadcasting that is not licensed and terrestrial in nature -

Makes you wonder!!

How will this effect Non Profit NCE Stations like K-LOve and other Christian Stations who webcast. Will they br able to contine to stream and just pay a one year fee?

For non-profit organizations they have a minimum fee as long as their monthly tlh doesn't exceed a number slightly above 150,000, then they have to pay the per song per listener rate as well.

More than likely many companies who stream will discontinue streaming music programming, its just too expensive even from companies such as Clear Channel unless they are looking for a loss. Stations like mine will either flip to all talk or just cease broadcasting. Contact your Congressman, ask them to do something about the Copyright Royalty Boards latest decsiion with digital royalties, and take a step further, ask them to repeal the DMCA.

These are great, man. I'm keeping up my end of the deal: I've got five of your audio commercials in rotation starting this weekend right now on AM 930 The Cockroach during RadioA2Z.

We CAN make a difference. Internet radio as we know it may not be around any longer, so take advantage and enjoy it while it lasts.

This sucks....I am just now about to launch my station in about 3-5 months! Well was...we will have to see. I was working on the programming and testing phase. Since I can't find a job in radio in Dallas, I was going to run my own station as a hobby...totally free to the listeners! I even have some backers that were going to help me pay for some of the bandwidth......THIS SUCKS!!!

I just found out about this while I was searching for some info on another subject. Does anyone know if any of the hearings are going to be on C-SPAN or anything of the like? And if so where would I find that info? I am going to do my part on the internet side as soon as I get done with this...and bet your bottom that I will be making a phone call or two first thing Monday morning!!!! I'm so sick of the major corporations picking and knocking down the little guys. Bullies they are in my opinion! They cant just conduct business as professionals, NO, they got to go for what the small business people have too. Have the record companies gotten so lazy that they got to go for what someone else has worked so hard for?!

I agree with part of an earlier post..."I thought this was a free country"...I thought that the freedom that we have was paid for in bloodshed, or has everyone that makes over $10,000 a month forgotten that!? It seems to me that greed is what drives this country now. Whatever happened to customer appreciation days and employees volunteering at the local blood bank or picking up trash in the park? Now hardly anyone flies an American flag anymore. When 911 hit, there was not a doorstep in America that did not have a flag waving and you could not find one anywhere to fly yourself. Now you don't see them being raised up anymore and they are collecting dust on the shelves!

I say that royalties should be based on the stations profit after operating costs and that ONE FORM OF GOVERNMENT should be the collector. As it stands right now....someone has simply put a non-profit stamp on a BUSINESS and called it something it is CLEARLY NOT. I wonder what those board members drive to work everyday. I'll bet you that they don’t drive Nissans or Hyundai’s! How much do you think that their houses cost? I think that I will call my station a non-profit station and go buy me a gas guzzling, pollution spewing Hummer tomorrow, and park it in front of my 3 story, 35 room mansion that I own thanks to my new non-profit internet station! I believe that they are going for this spike in fees cause that have to pay for all the lawyers to sue the 13 year old kids that are broadcasting on the internet and they will not be the ones to pay for them! Then again, if they are spending all this money for their lawyers to go to congress and lobby to have the rates increased....are the artists still getting their share? Or are they seeing the same amount being paid to them if not less!? I would LOVE to see an audit done on Soundexchange and the RIAA! Lets see just how NON-PRIFIT they REALLY ARE!!

Rob- The minimum monthly fee is $500 per year, not per month. Of course, once the aggregate figures exceed a certain threshold the per play rate kicks in and it's gets terminal.
Small stations may be able to survive but anyone with a large audeince is toast. It's legislation that penalizes success. Nice huh?
I am building an internet station for a local university and $500 per year is well within our budget. But we estimate that our audience will be very modest and probably not push us over threshold. We can live with that.
Perhaps internet radio should bond with over the air radio and just flat out refuse to pay anything. What are they gonna do? Sue ALL of us?
CD sales are down over 20 per cent. Is that our fault?
