Internet Radio...Need Help Please

I got out of radio a few years ago. I was recently contracted by an old high school classmate from 40 years ago. He asked me questions about starting an internet radio station for our old high school to be run by the students. My friend wants to run live remote play by play football on this station. I could not answer his questions. Can you help.

What does it take to get an internet station on?
Ballpark of expense involved?
Gear for play by play?

Since this would be something for the students, I assume they would not need the best, latest and greatest equipment. We might be able to get some gear donated as this is in a major market.

Thank You for your time.

First thing your going to need is an internet connection either in the press box or wi-fi close by...i imagine bigger schools might have a connection in the press box..but i bet it's something most schools have never thought of.....and while you may be able to talk your hometown school into installing dsl or a cable line..there is the associated cost to the school for doing that..and you most likely will not have an ISP at away games...but once a connection is established..all you will need are two laptops, a good usb mic and simply log onto and use ustream..it's free.and works very well...you will use one pc as the "broadcast" computer..the other as a monitor to know when your on and if you drop off...and as a bonus..you can add a cam to ustream and people can watch what your broadcasting as well as hear it...and comment on the chat board as well.....i don't use laptops, but i imagine two powerful enough to do the show will run 400-500 each new..if you don't already have them..a good usb mic around 150.00..couple sets of headphones..50.00..and the optional cam around 50 for a hi def version..but the biggest problem is the actual ISP you choose...i run an internet radio show on ustream complete with cam..and DSL will not cut it...the UPLOAD speed is the critical component here..and DSL does not have enough power to get it done without cutting in and out..i had to opt for a cable hookup with a minimum of 2 megs upload speed..download speed is not that critical...once you gather all this up..simply head over to USTREAM andjoin, setup a show and name it and tell everyone where to find it...it's extremely simple...good luck
