Hello I am new to this board but all of you seem to know a lot about radio. This may not be a question pertaining directly to Pittsburgh, but it is related to it. What are all your opinions of Internet radio? I have been reading about it for awhile now and reading about this company out in Wexford called Talkshoe that allows people to host their own radio show. I am skeptical on the whole thing but a lot of people think the internet will be the future for radio and that it will somehow combine with regular satellite radio. For some reason, hosting an online radio show or being an internet DJ seems a little amateurish but maybe it is the future and could be the next big thing like vlogging ( like rocketboom.com) or Myspace or Youtube. What do you all think about internet radio?
Nice board by the way. I have lived in Pittsburgh all my life and it is finally nice to see people who are in the area and are passionate about the topic.
Without a doubt, internet radio holds tremendous potential. So much so, that the satcasters and all of the media conglomorates are frantically building a web component to their businesses. In fact, many industry observers feel that satellite radio is just an interim step to internet radio.
But unlike terrestrial radio, internet radio is a media-rich, interactive experience. One site can have multiple audio streams, videos, blogs, podcasts, data streams and the ablility to buy songs or albums and other items through the site either by a link to Amazon or some other retailer or from the site itself.

Here is a new start-up company that is offering internet broadcast solutions which will help you get an idea of the potential of this technology:

Several companies are offering internet radios without the computer. Here are two:

But the technology has nothing to do with production values. An internet broadcast can sound just as professional and be just as local as any OTA broadcast.
So keep a positive view of this technology because there is every indication that it is the future of radio.
