Interurban Spot

Does anybody have any information about a series of spots for The Interurban restaurant. I heard a couple of them on KTOK in OKC today.

They are really catchy ads with nice little stories about riding the interurban to places that used to exist in Oklahoma City, such as the Belle Isle Amusement Park, while some music plays that conjures up images of lariat twirling on the wide open plains.

What I wonder about is if they were written, produced and voiced locally. One thing that jumps out like the trolley pole jumping off the wire is one of the lines goes something like: ". . .men like Classen, Shartel and Overholster . . . ": yes, that's what he said, "Overholster"! At that point, i've forgotten all about the Interurban restaurant and am wondering where someone came up with "Overholster" and how it made it to air in Oklahoma City.

I wonder who the ad agency is...I haven't heard the spots. But if they had contacted me, I could have verified the historical aspects of the spots...like Overholser's correct name. Sounds like the pizza spots that ran this winter in various basketball games...the copy made reference to an "Andrew Hamilton" being enough to buy a pizza. Someone finally realized, it's not an "Andrew Hamilton" it is an "Alexander Hamilton." Ad agencies should fact check before they crank out spots.

I haven't heard the Interurban spot since the day I posted the question above. I did, however, hear another spot today on KTOK advertising Chickasha National Bank or something. Among the branch locations are Chickasha, Alex and "Men-co". "Men-co" not "Meenco". At least whomever was reading the script didn't say "Chickashaw"

Please tell me that these spots are not produced in Oklahoma City. Some hot voice talent from around here needs to go to whatever foreign state where all of these ads are produced and become the exclusive "voice of Oklahoma".

This reminds me of the TV 60’s that ran in the early 70’s for movies like “Gentle Ben” and other family features. The final 15 or 20 seconds had a v/o guy from the Bronx reading the names of cities and towns as fast as he could, totally mispronouncing nearly all the towns. “Tuh-lee-quah, Musk-oo-gee” ect. I remember reading or seeing a story about the production company that produced those spots, the v/o would try to do all the tags for a hundred or more markets all in one take. They didn’t care whether he was correct or not. They thought that got more attention with viewers.

Which of course reminds ME of those horrid Great State Of A Fair spots, where the singer lists fair items and links them to various Oklahoma towns. There were at least three mispronounced that I remember: Boise City and Achille were two, but I can't remember the third. Others were borderline mispronounced, but not egregious enough to fuss over. It was fairly interesting that they got Cyril right; if you're gonna do one, why not do 'em all right? Speaking of Cyril, maybe that was the third one, their neighbor Cement.
