Interview with WCBS news guy Steve Scott

Steve Scott on WCBS is very good.

Wow I never knew Steve Scott of WCBS 880 was from San Jose, Ca where KQW/KCBS was born. I know CBS owns 2 radio stations that carry the claim first radio station in the USA KDKA in Pittsburgh, Pa (Via Group W ownership) and KCBS AM 740(born in San Jose but moved to San Francisco in the 1940's) from various ownership changes from 1909-1949. (CBS obtained KCBS in 1949.) I know I heard that SJ State was where Steve Scott started his radio career. Was Steve Scott on KLIV during his San Jose years? I know KLIV in San Jose is all-news for Silicon Valley but sometimes air sports produced by SJ state.

But I don't think KCBS (AM) officially changed its CoL from San Jose to San Francisco until the summer of 1951. In that year, KCBS moved its transmitter from the marshes in Alviso (in the east Bay, north of San Jose) to the current four-tower site in Novato at the north end of the Bay. With that move, KCBS increased its power from 7.5 kW-U to 50 kW-U DA-2. The story of how KCBS, rather than KSFO, ultimately got the 50-kW 740 signal from Novato is long and complicated. I couldn't possibly do justice to it. Telling it properly would take somebody far more knowledgeable about Bay-area radio history than i am.

Hi, recto101! :)
I got my start on my college station, KSJS-FM, at San Jose State. As a matter of fact, I did work at KLIV in the early 1980s...but, it was not all-news back then. It had a Big Band "Music of Your Life" format. I anchored newscasts between songs from the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Glenn Miller and Doris Day. I learned a TON about the business while I was there.

Thank you for your nice comments.
