Introduction

I'm Doug Fields, and I reside in the Midwest, and I have.. I guess it would be classified by some as an oldies show. We focus primarily on 50's, 60's and 70's, Rock & Roll, Rhythm & Blues, Doo Wop, Soul, Northern Soul and Rockabilly. I collect old vinyl records, and have literally thousands of LP's, 45's and 78's.

One thing that sets us apart I guess, is that we play ONLY the original vinyl records. I like to think that we converse WITH our listeners and just just talking AT them. Unfortunately, we are not currently on the air. "Life" had gotten in the way.

My co-host also works at Wal-Mart and has family obligations, Simultaneously, I also work in television. Cameraman, Graphics, Sound, Lighting and sometimes Director. In the end, we had conflicting schedules and just couldn't do the show.

At the moment, I'm not even working in television. I've been out for a month and a half. I guess you could say I'm "legally blind". Only TEMPORARILY I hope... The medical profession doesn't know what this is. I've had an MRI, a CT Scan and a host of other tests.. so they're simply calling it, "A Medical Event".

The doctor originally thought, "Extreme Vertigo", but I was checked over by a "Vertigo Expert" or whatever they're called.. and said, "well, it isn't Vertigo..." so since they don't know what else to do.. they have me going to Physical Therapy a couple times a week.

I'm still able to see video.. and so I watch our shows, and take note of the credits at the end of the shows.. to see whose doing what. I know from experience they're having a hard time over there, because they're having to work with very inexperienced people. (I've witnessed it.)

I'd get there early, open up.. get the control room ready, then get the studio ready. Cameras, lighting, and put together the set for the first show, so when everyone gets there, we're ready to roll. Well, enough of all that...

I'm in my mid 60's, and have wanted to work in radio since I was five years old. I fell in love with (what was then) radio. I love everything about it. I'm also a Shortwave/AM DX'er. Map on the wall.. that sort of thing.

My radio show is recorded at my home studio, then sent out to the various stations. I record the show in FLAC. For stations that are not equipped for FLAC, I'll send it out as a 320 MBPS MP3.

I love radio.. it's who I am. You guys know how it is when radio gets in your blood... My show is, "The Vinyl Grotto Radio Show". Until recently, I would scout the countryside in search of old vinyl records. I take a battery-operated player with me.. to flea markets, thrift stores, yard sales, etc., play the single, and if it sounds good.. fits our format.. I buy it.

I love AM radio, regardless of it's current standing, because that's where much of this music was born. Don't worry.. I also like FM. I like my show to sound as radio sounded in the 1960's and 70's. I also like the sound of the Harris MSP-90 Tri-Band.

I'm glad to now be a part of Radio Discussions, and I hope my contributions, pro or con, will be of benefit to the rest of the community.

Doug Fields,
The Vinyl Grotto Radio Show
