Ion Launches Air TV Subscription Service in Phoenix

I cannot get them on my TV, but my transport stream reader is showing 10 new subscription subchannels for KPPX, three of which are unencrypted. I can watch the unencrypted channels through TS Reader and VLC Media Player. Trip confirms that this is the new Air TV subscription service.

New subchannels:
100 - Air Box 100, an unencrypted channel, currently airing UFC 139. Mainly sharp picture - just a little blocking.
200 - TeleFor, a Spanish language channel , I assume.
201 - CineMex, a Spanish language channel , I assume. Movie channel, probably.
202 - LTNvela, a Spanish language channel , I assume. Telenovela channel, likely.
203 - VidRola, a Spanish language channel , I assume. Video channel?
204 - Sorpresa, a Spanish-language children's network. Is this the same Sorpresa that evolved out of HTVN 10 years ago?
300 - Gol TV, a Spanish-language soccer channel
400 - Starz, the movie channel
500 - qubo2, an unencrypted simulcast of qubo on channel 51.2
501 - Life2, an unencrypted simulcast of IonLife on channel 51.3

Trip showed me today how to access this. Unfortunately, here in south FL, it's only the Lake Worth (West Palm Beach) ION WPXP 67 that has these multi-subs; Miami's ION 35 does not.

Also, I was unable to view any still frames of any of these, except the main "ION Three". However, the others did display text info, via TSReader.

My converter box does not allow for 3-digit subchannels, like the ones mentioned above---it's strictly (for me) via the TSReader.

They are *not* present here in Nashville (WNPX). I am reading that they *are* on WXPX Tampa.

Chris, I posted a reply over on the WTFDA boards suggesting a way you might be able to decode audio/video on the three unencrypted channels. (by streaming them to VLC, which supports MPEG-4) Since I don't have any MPEG-4 broadcasts within range, I can't test it here.
 
As of tonight, the H.264 subchannels are gone. Oh well - it was fun while it lasted.
 
I'm here in Southern California...I did a re-scan of my TV a few nights ago, and I was curious as to what these additional channels were as well. I do remember sometime ago (vaguely anyway) that Ion was going to lease some subchannel space on its stations to independent companies. I wasn't too surprised in regards to seeing additional channels there, but the actual programming services being offered.

Great - MORE bandwidth being wasted on Spanish-Language channels! RTV is fighting to keep it's full-power affilates and Antenna TV is struggling to get affiliates, and this service comes along and snags prime bandwidth from ION.

Being that these subchannels are MPEG4, they take much less room - anywhere from 500 kbps to 1.16 Mbps each. In contrast, Mobile DTV takes 1.83 Mbps and an MPEG2 subchannel gets about 4-5 Mbps.

Nobody else is watching Ion - why not let the Spanish-speaking people have a shot at it?

Channel 51.200 is TeleFormula, a Mexican network that aired on KMCC 34 Laughlin NV back in 2006.
Channel 51.201 is CineMex, which is the name of one of the largest movie cinema owners in Mexico.
Channel 51.203 is Video Rola, a music video channel.
Channel 51.204, Sorpresa, is a children's network that was started using equipment purchased from Hispanic Television Network (HTVN), which was in the process of being disbanded.
Channel 51.300, Gol TV, is both English and Spanish, it seems.
