ION: Positively Local?

Yes, I saw that the other day but neglected to post it here. If I read it correctly, ION, in its infinite wisdom, wants to see its affiliates compete with local newscasts. Thing is, it's hard to do when your network has no new programming to offer. I doubt those reruns of "Ghost Whisperer" and "Mama's Family" are setting the world on fire.

Then again, I suppose those infomercials for car dealerships could qualify as "local" content...

Ion was removed from my pre-sets long, long ago due to its complete lack of interesting programming. The past few weeks my local affiliate has been running repeat showing of The Godfather and The Godfather Part 2 so often I thought the station was unmanned.

Another garbage TV station.

Hey, remember the days when Paxson's "network" first hit the air, with promises of "family friendly programming"?

Nothing is as "family friendly" as countless reruns of "The Godfather" and "GoodFellas." But at least they're edited for content.

Now, go feed your mother, as Joe Pesci's character says through the magic of audio dubbing.

Considering the quality and usefullness of the "big 3's" newscasts in our town, no one would ever notice any difference. Since ION reruns almost everything to death, the local affiliate could tape one newscast and simply repeat it as often as desired, just like the never ending Godwhatever saga.

Reminds me of the days when CBN used to own local television stations around the country, and used to routinely "edit-for-content" such dangerous, subversive shows as "Gilligan's Island...."The Doris Day Show"....and "The Brady Bunch". ;D

Spare me......

Ion Television runs the same content on all their stations. So their stations are for the most part, unmanned. The Godfather & Godfather Part 2 have been played to death on Ion Life. I don't know about Ion Television as I never watch Ion Television (my mom does). If I watch Ion, it's Ion Life.

People are actually program that station?
The channel was pretty decent when it was still run on the PAX moniker, they did have some fun game shows like Supermarket Sweep, Shop Til You Drop and Family Feud. I remember they also would air some Angels games along with KCAL 9 here in LA when there was scheduling conflicts. They would also repackage the 11AM NBC 4 NEWS for 3PM.
They also actually had a primetime schedule, airing originals like Touched by a Miracle and Doc.
Now...it's virtually paid programming all day. Sad to see where television goes.

Suggestion: 7pm newscasts in markets with 7-10pm primetimes. I'm sure there'd be an audience, a lot like KHTV and KTVT's experiments with it circa 1990 - it's just that nowadays people commute even farther than ever thanks to sprawl.

We have a 7pm Newscast in the Bay Area that is produced by KTVU, the local Fox station and airs on their Indie sister station KICU TV 36

Uh.. I read the story and came to a totally different conclusion.
The guy at Ion said he didn't know if they'd do local news. He discussed how hard it would be to break into that business.
It was in response to a question by the reporter, not a volunteered idea for something they WILL do.

Sounds to me like what he was saying is that they recognize how "un-local" all their O&O stations are. They look the same in every market. He wants to do "something" to change that, but isn't sure what it would be. Yeah, it might be some kind of news.. but maybe not. I'd bet more on buying local sports rights. That has a far higher potential to pay off.

I would think most major TV markets would have multiple duopolies owning stations now - and that means more opportunities for time-shifting news programming. In the Bay Area now, you can find a one-hour or half-hour new show at all times between 5:00 and 11:30 - except for the 8:00 PM hour.

Sports programming could work in some markets. But I think pro sports programming would probably be too cost prohibitive.

Depends on the sport - and college sports might work too.

I'd suggest trying a half-hour local newscast sports and weather program for each large market station. Doing a full-fledged hard news venture would be very costly, and outsourced news programs from an established news departments (think CW, MyNet, or indy stations) might already exist. So why not just stick to weather and hyper-local sports coverage?

Heck, you don't even have to make it an even split amongst sports or weather if the 'news' warrants it. Think of ongoing severe weather [or its aftermath], press conference coverage, interviews, and special weather or sports-related feature stories. Maybe one of those community event-type segments you typically see on morning or noon news broadcasts can be thrown in as well. For the folks who still want actual news: Let the local newspaper be in charge of scrolling graphic with basic headlines, all directing viewers to their website for full details.

So instead of taking the full news plunge, this theoretical sports/weather show merely dips its toe into that realm, providing an cheaper alternative for local/regional advertisers.

Assuming you mean Hearst Television... they can't. They already technically have a duopoly with WCVB and WMUR.
