iPad for Remotes

A friend of mine owns a small station, and is quite active doing remotes from the area. He has been using an iPhone with a mic adapter to go back to the station via telco, with pretty good results. Now, he would like to improve things.

His plan is to get an new G-4 iPad and use the mic adapter and Skype to go back to the studio via internet. He would also like to use the iPad to control the station automation at the same time, and eliminate the need for a board op. This is a 1-1/2 person operation and he can't always get someone to run the board.

Is anyone else doing anything similar to this? Or are we missing something?

Can you run Skype and another app a the same time? I think Skype doesn't like to run with somehting else. If you bail out of Skype into the background it generally isn't running if I remember right.... Unfortunately, I think the Tieline app is the same way. It sort of forces a guy to use the iPad/iphone/itouch for one thing at a time.

We have been using an old laptop to do this. Computer is slow and most of the time we are using this over a wireless ISP or wifi.

Skype works great except you have to use tools and Audio Settings to over ride automatic level control. This causes the voice to drop to a lower level when levels go high. Bandwidth on wifi has no caused us to loose connection but we have to refresh sometimes.

No board op. We have music and other events on the station computer and use logmein. Free for non profit use. I have used teamviewer and gotomypc before. Team viewer has multiple issues. Gotomypc has to be used in the free version or it will mute the pc on air (so you can hear it at your location) and no fix for this has been offered. Gotomypc worked best but at $600 a year was expensive.

This said the ipad should handle the same process quicker than the old computer we are using. My wife's old computer until she upgraded, allowing us to trial the process with this.

I had some good luck with Windows Media Encoder at the remote streaming all the audio from the remote into the studio.

It is 'kinda' like the old days of spinning music on site with great audio quality; but the delay was telling.
