Does anybody have any tips or tricks for recording phone interviews via the iphone?
A friend of mine has his own website and plans to conduct interviews ... he has an iphone and I'm trying to figure out the easiest way for him to record, as well as at the best audio quality available to him.

Nah, that doesn't help. But this will.

Tell your friend to buy:
1. A small mixer (like a Mackie 402VLZ3)
2. A "camcorder" audio/video cable (has a plug that goes in the iPhone and 3 RCA connectors on the other end)
3. A 3.5mm to stereo RCA cable (if he doesn't have one already)
4. 2 RCA to 1/4" adapters (available at Radio Shack)
5. A microphone (your choice) and an XLR male to XLR female cable.


Wiring:

Plug the mic into input 1.
Grab the camcorder cable and put the RCA to 1/4" adapters on the yellow and red plugs.
Connect the yellow plug to input 2 and connect the red plug to the right channel main out.
Grab the RCA to 3.5 mm cable - connect the RCA side to the "tape out" connection and the other end to whatever will do the recording (e.g. a desktop computer line in jack)

Be sure input 1 is "panned" to the left channel and input 2 is "panned to the right".

That's it. You'll have to tweak the levels after getting it set up.

Yeah--don't. That's what tried-and-true cassette (or better yet, Minidisc) recorders are for. Field-tested, Mom-approved.
 
While it is kind of pricey this JK Audio gadget will do the trick...

I have a client that uses one of these to record off his Android phone but I tested it with my iPhone. He connects a broadcast quality mic to the input and connects the output to an Edirol R-09 to record.

Once you get the level set you are in good shape...
