Fred iZinnemann's accomplished picture of the James Jones novel picked up eight Oscars, including best film, director, supporting actor (Frank Sinatra) and actress (Donna Reed) in this emotionally gripping account of American army life shortly before the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in 1941. Although not without some minor flaws, the movie compensates with many unforgettable sequences (not least the beach love scene between Lancaster and the superb Kerr), all shot in striking monochrome by Burnett Guffey.
