Greetings,

While in Dublin I noticed there were many homes and businesses with high gain UHF antennas atop towers or tall mast. What station were they trying to receive?

Maybe Digital TV? Most of the transmitters are low-power, and not very common yet (as I have heard), so they may be trying for signals from adjacent counties.

Of course, I hear that the UK area people are much smarter than us Americans, who would rather pay for Cable and Satellite than get it for free ;D .

Speaking of Dublin receving distant stations, is it easy to picked up UK stations fom Northern Ireland or Whales if you lived in Dublin?

Looks like, according to Google Maps, it's going to be 100 Km plus, but it's over water, too.

Given a reasonably high receiving mast height, it would be possible. I doubt it would be 24/7, but probably often useable. And, with tropo effects.........

I know that Ireland has 4 terrestial channels.

RTE - 1
RTE - 2
TV - 3
TG - 4

But, where is channel 6 on the the terrestial platform? Also, doesn't Ireland have enough tv allocation space to support a second commerical channel?

Speaking of Irish Television is it easy to pick up UK tv stations from Dublin or hard? When I was in Dublin a few years ago. I cannot picked up BBC radio from Northern Ireland or Wales.

For Dublin OTA reception of UK TV, you generally need tall masts and quad Yagi arrays to get the analog services. For digital OTA, higher masts are required because Freeview is at a lower power.

However UK TV is available on cable and satellite so over-air reception is not required.

In the East off Ireland and near the Board of North you Got the BBC 1, 2 ITV (UTV, UTV Media regional tv for the north of Ireland ) Channel 4 this channel where extra to the RTE 1 and RTE 2 tv so poeple put up mast to gain the extra channels only , it wasnt until late 90 when ireland get two new channels Frist been TG4 ( Irish language television channel ) state owned and run from Galway in the west (TG4 was formerly known as Teilifís na Gaeilge or TnaG)

Deflectors
In rural areas where neither cable or MMDS are available, UHF Television Programme Retransmission systems or deflectors pick up the UK terrestrial channels (either from Northern Ireland or Wales), and retransmit them on local UHF signals along with other channels. These operators faced legal action in the late 1990s from MMDS operators this started in Early 80s in ireland had relay system to brodcast BBC/UTV/Channel4 , this were pirate TV systems , closed down to make way for MMDS run by Chorus and NTL owned by UPC

Approximately 21.5% of homes receive only RTÉ One, RTÉ Two, TV3 and TG4 only .
78% of homes receive additional channels via cable , Mmds and Satellite . in 2012 end off analouge the Free To Air TV's with MPEG4 , HD Television Available In Ireland From 2010 all the main Transmission is up and running on test around Ireland with Poelpe on the North and east also reciver UK Freeveiw channels .
In September 2006, it was estimated that 70% of Irish homes have cable, satellite or MMDS TV, with 70% of these using digital systems. As a result the majority of Irish homes have a large number of TV channels available .

RTÉ International aimed at the Irish audience abroad . It is due to be on air in Britain by the end of 2009 - however it is unknown if it will be available in Ireland itself . It will eventually broadcast to mainland Europe and North America . Due to on going problem with Money it due not to com on air until 2012 - 2015 now

Defunct channels

Channel 3 (Later known as Channel D) was a short-lived Dublin based television station broadcasting from July 1981 to October 1981. It was a pirate TV channel.


Capital Television was another short-lived Dublin channel which only broadcast a caption for a week, along with a testcard at night another week. It, too, was a pirate TV channel.

Nova TV was another Dublin pirate TV channel that was broadcast for a short time in the 1980s. Nova radio

Telefís na Gaeltachta was a pirate Irish language service in the west of Ireland, and a fore-runner of the state-owned broadcaster, TG4.

Tara TV was an Irish channel that was broadcast in the UK on Sky Digital from 1997 until RTÉ forced its closure in 2002. It was also broadcast in Ireland for much of this time.

RLO TV was another legal/pirate television station (Satellite and UHF), broadcast in Limerick by Radio Limerick One in 1999 and 2000. An official license was granted for the satellite service in 1997 at which time digital broadcasts began making this the first digital television channel in Ireland beating RTÉ by years. During the UHF years while the station was not airing its own content they would broadcast a relay of UK Channel 5.

Chorus Sports on Chorus Cable, which showed local sports, greyhound racing, and national motor racing events. This ceased broadcasting in January 2007.

Waterford@8 was a sister local TV service of WLR FM in Waterford. It was available on cable in Waterford city and Dungarvan and on MMDS in east Waterford and south Kilkenny. The service launched in 2000, and ceased in 2005.

Sky News Ireland was an Irish version of Sky News, carried to Ireland on Sky Digital, and by most cable companies. It ceased broadcasting in November 2006 due to low audience figures.

Bubble Hits Ireland was a 24 hour music channels targeting both the Ireland and the rest of Europe (European version). On February 13, 2009, Bubble Hits ceased broadcasting due to a downturn in advertising revenue.

G Channel (Galway ) broadcast a caption 24 hour music channels targeting young

Digital tv(DTT) been role out as we post , but not on air full time yet as channel do go missing on a day to day , Five is on satellitte but on the outher channels menu . the cable company here dose not have right to rebrodcast it
DTT rte one and two tv3 tg4 e3 bbc1,2,3,4, bbcnews 24 cbbcs cbbc and so on but as extra channel we still waitting two fine out the line up

The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland , Minister for Communications rte networks . wont put a date on the switch over and given a very bad name to DDT and DAB industry
