Daryl- I agree with your impression. Here's a possible reason- The passing of a well-known entertainer is a news item. The passing of non-famous people is not a news item.
We wake up to hear the news of the passing of famous people, but not "ordinary" people.
And famous people have a distribution of personal characteristics similar to everyone else. They might not get checked out for a condition, just as your neighbor may neglect to do it.
I think there is a social media connection to this. With so many "friends and followers" on social media, users have an instant window into the lives of hundreds or thousands of people they would otherwise not be aware of. A social media saturated person may think "everyone is dying" or "the world is falling apart", when in fact it may be about the same as it always was. The user is just more connected and aware of things that happen to people.
