Irving translator to change frequency

Apparently the FCC listened to interference complaints about K221FM 92.1, which relays programming from KDKR 91.3 Decatur. After first being told to reduce their ERP from 250 to 25 watts under an STA, Penfold Communications has done as they were instructed and filed to change channels. They've applied to move to 99.9 but they won't be able to get back to their higher power, instead running just 53 watts if the application is approved. The FCC acted in response to a number of "third-party complaints" that were relayed by co-channel KXEZ Farmersville owner Ken Jones.

The religious station is leaving 92.1 ? Hallelujah !

laugh all you want, but I sent an email to Mr. Jones many moons ago when the translator first popped up. He had me fill out a complaint doc not too long ago. My 1 watter sits on 99.9 tho. no biggie. Now if they could just fix the sound on The Range (see bad sound at KHYI topic)

I sent emails to both 92.1's & filed a compliant with the FCC. Would like to thank everyone else who did. Glad to see that K221FM is going away.

Jules & Liberty... where can your stations be heard? I know liberty's is up in mckinney somewhere.. just not sure quite where..

I complained due to interference with KTFW. Very severe interference all the way to downtown fort worth. I previously could listen to KTFW all the way to DFW in my truck. Very welcome news. I complained directly to the FCC and to KTFW.

99.9 is pretty much the last open frequency in DFW with no first adjacent spilling over. Is this by design, or can 99.9 be had for a hefty sum?

I figured you could smack a Class A on
99.9 somewhere around Lowry Crossing or Lucas without interfering with WACO or KMOO.
I'm not sure what's up north around 99.9 to keep one out of Dallas, Could be spacing rules.

99.9 was a "vacant" Class A allotment for Van Alstyne for a number of years. There are currently two applicants for it, Hispanic Family Christian Network of Dallas and Bill Wright's Gospel American Network of Garland.

There's nothing up north of any concern for such a low-power operation (6kW max). To the south, Waco really doesn't figure into it since the Val Alstyne allocation is already limited by Mineola and KLUR Wichita Falls so there's not a lot wiggle room.

So, THAT'S why all the Christmas lights music was on 99.9 FM...

Oh gawd, him again? I was hoping he'd found a new hobby...

I don't really remember how this thing went down with the 99.9 allocation, but it's reserved for non-commercial use and was first proposed back in the late 90's. The filing window didn't open, however, until a little over a year ago and how these two particular groups survived the cut must be an interesting story. Maybe they're not the same people but a little investigation would probably reveal that they do have a relationship of some sort.

Isn't 99.9 already used for a translator for KSKY in Tarrant county? How would there be two 99.9 translators in the same area (since KDKR's translator is in western Dallas County)?

Tarrant Count KSKY is 95.5 FM.

No, there are two of them in Tarrant County, Arlington on 95.5 and Fort Worth on 99.9. And if it matters, neither of them (nor 92.9 in Dallas) are designated as translators; they're "emergency repeaters." As such they don't have call letters and aren't subject to the usual power restrictions. On the surface it might appear that KSKY would have the advantage and could fight the Irving translator's frequency change. I doubt that they will, though, since they're lucky to have got the repeaters on the air in the first place.
