Is "1025 The Bone" trying to dethrone WXTB

I was just listening to an online stream of WHPT "The Bone". They were just playing "Rollin" by Limb Bizkit. Then "Rooster" by Alice in Chains. Songs that for the most part were in heavy rotation on WXTB. Did "The Bone" actually change formats to Active Rock or are they still "Classic Rock". Is Cox Posutioning WHPT to dethrone "98 Rock" or not.

Just listening you would already figure "The Bone" isn't Classic Rock anymore. Which means the Tampa St.Pete Market does not currentely have a Classic Rock Station. Except for the portions of the market that can pick up WHTQ.

Could the stations be pretty soon verbally attacking each other. Such as with Clear Channel with Thunder 1035 and Cox with "The New 102.5".(Before the name change.)

Have a ball. I won't be posting, have no opinion, and wish em all good luck

They are always in competition with CC and CBS and their targeting audiences. Though they say they play Tampa Bay's best rock... what they did was get rid of most of the 70s music and added songs from 10 years ago thru the 90s. It's mostly the popular overplayed songs that 98Rock dishes out to their targeting group (which are tired from hearing it).

Overall the Bone is better music wise than before... but wont beat 98Rock unless they had harder classics from the 80s and early 2000's like
Disturbed
Godsmack
Shinedown
and a couple others.

Also 80s like
Skid Row
Iron Maiden
Pantera
Anthrax
Queensryche
or any big hit from hairband-metal.

people really want to hear old hit songs that you don't hear everyday. That is what
makes a radio station in the classic format. Not...ahh this song again...

98Rock still sucks... did get alittle better for a month or 2 after CC picked up more new rock..but
again faded that out quickly by playing their favorite "Most recognizable songs from 1993-1999" and new songs that been out and faded off the charts 6 months ago.

I personally like 98Rock. While the station can get repetitive at times they play good music. They play stuff as far back as the 60's and 70's such as Jimi Hendrix, Led Zepplin and AC-DC. But they still play all the newer stuff like Disturbed, Korn and other artists.

Now if Clear Channel can stay on top of Current Rock that would be great too. Like they do with their Top 40 stations like WFLZ. Or if they add more 80's and 90's Metal that hasn't seen airplay on years on other stations. (Like what WRUF did in Gainesville.)

I would agree with the "The Bone" however. They need more of the harder stuff and better variety of the classics.

Yep...exactly what the listeners in general want.

The bone sucked from day one, and they still do... but now they run liners that say, "we don't sound OLD anymore!"

Then they play...

♫Take me down to the paradise city!♪

What was the line they used against Thunder? "We don't play wimpy music!"

Whatever, half their playlist can still be heard on "the new" 107.3 The Eagle! ::)

Cedric come off the AM Dial for a while and smell the fresh air its effecting your brain....LOL
Now with all the cut backs CC is doing to the Tampa Cluster its just a matter of time before 98 rock gets Boned! The only saving grace is Toby Knapp on the mornings.....But could be worse.....Brently formerly of the Cowhead & Brently show from back in the day on Outlaw 925 could be there......wait no that wouldn't work either you have to stay awake to do a morning show! Something that he just couldn't grasp.....oh well who knows maybe they will give Jack Harris his wish and it will be Jack Harris rock n roll morning show! ;D ;D ;D ;D

Jack Harris was a very good Top 40 DJ back on WRC the Great 98. I'm not joking. Go to their tribute page. He is as good as Simon Trane or Lee Sherwood.

Interesting enough I loved 102.5 back when Paxson owned it. Played some pretty good music as The Point 102.5. Not to mention it was always current. Good mix between many subgenres of rock. Several musicians started out careers with their music being played on WHPT. None of that Van Halen and Guns N Roses crap that you hear on other Rock Stations.

Then one mornng my mom tuned in just to hear "We Rock Out more than that wimpy Thunder". Then followed by "Welcome to the Jungle' by Guns N Roses. Turned her off the station for good. AAA is a good format. I wish I had an HD Radio so I could pick up 107.3 HD-2.

Personally I like a station that plays a good rock variety. Not a bunch of racket but not music that will put you to sleep. WMMO in Orlando doesn't do a bad job.

According to the PPM's they did dethrone WXTB in November. December...not so much.

Guess the audience listened through the super-tight playlist 4 or 5 times and switched back to WXTB.

As long as 97X still bills as well as it does on it's itty-bitty signal Cox will probably not take The Bone full-on "Active" Then again, perhaps they could co-exist in the same way the old 70's-80's "Bone" and Eagle did.

As bad as current rock fans think we have it in Tampa Bay, it could be much worse. See the Miami or G'ville boards for details.

Bring back 95YNF...................Ron & Fezzy, where are you?

Miami Sucks for Rock music.... Zeta was alright...but when they had WSHE back in the late
80s and early 90s... it was great.. alot of new current rock.. (back then it was all hairbands and metal of course) Still though, if Rock radio would play their active top 25 more often like a pop station does.. rockers would be listening more.

All the rock n roll out there and these stations limit their playlist to 200-300 same old, tired, stale rock hits. Because they were tested? AC/DC to ZZ Top, play it all..........deep cuts baby.

In Jacksonville, Cox has an Active Rocker (Rock 104-5) and Modern Rocker (X-1029).
The difference is Jax does not have a competing signal offering Active Rock like Tampa does.

Still, I don't see why Cox cannot add some currents & recurrents to 102.5's existing playlist. The style of the music is very compatible with much of the 90's & early 00's stuff they already play. By not playing recent / current music, The Bone is giving 98Rock too much breathing room.

Both Jax stations have very limited playlists. several times during the day you will hear the same new rock song on both stations. Weird, very weird. The Active Rocker really leans new rock, not enough deep cuts played. Cox is great a really limiting the playlists by songs that "test" well. :(

102.5 is still a Classic Rock station...though promo out "Tampa Bay's Best Rock" all they did was greatly decrease the 70s and increase the overplayed 90s-00. They took 98rocks over-played music and put it on their station. Ugly! They should of went to old WYNF... play 2 New Songs a hour.. 1 re-current..and rest Classic Rock from mostly 82-93.. Of course that is mostly hair bands/metal/seattle scene. Or they can Flip to Todays Rock and play top 20 active rock (moreso than 98) and be a POP station that plays mostly todays rock with #1 hits from the past.. including hairbands,seattle,.... whatever that was top of the charts from time to time.
