How else could you explain why this morning, Moby, in an obvious pre-taped message right before the start of his show, announced a ticket giveaway to... no, not Taylor Swift or Kenny Chesney, but the "Happy Together" Tour, June 16 in Hiawassee, GA, featuring The Turtles, The Buckinghams and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees! Not necessarily the same demo as Moby's show, or the country format for that matter...

Is 106.1 WNGC Flipping To Oldies?

Maybe some of the older country listeners grew up listening to those artists when they were younger.

Seriously, it's probably just the promotion of a local event, and there are probably a lot of country listeners that would be interested in that concert. I would guess that WNGC's demo is older than, say, Bull's. I remember when the Beach Boys were regulars at the old Lanierland country music amphitheater off Jot 'Em Down Road between Cumming and Gainesville.

Actually, oldies and country have a history of sharing the same audience. When WBIG-FM in Washington DC signed on in the early 90's, it hired away WMZQ's morning show for that reason. They also came under fire because the afternoon guy joked that the morning show came from "the lowest common denominator station!"
When you think about it, it makes more sense than what you see at first glance. Both oldies and country target 25-54, and both are pretty even in their cume of male and female audience members. So, they're already going after the same segment of the population, and they'll naturally share some of those same listeners.

I never considered how country and oldies classic hits usually target the same demographic (especially WNGC's playlist), when I first heard the promo. Actually, the first thing that went through my mind was when Cox acquired the station (along with others) four years ago, and there was format flip speculation aplenty.
In this day and age, a station like WNGC is not going to be that selective on what advertising they take. As for the promoters, they know that there is no station that targets exactly the demo they need, plus they get real attractive rates there, so it works for both parties.

Sure, not every country listener likes oldies, but enough do. Country during the 1960's was targeting more of an adult audience, so many of today's boomer-age country listeners were probably listening to the Beach Boys rather than Jim Reeves or Porter Wagoner.
Plus, it's a small market, and I bet the Beach Boys show is the biggest thing happening that weekend for 25 miles around Hiawassee.

I bet it'll be bigger than an Olive Garden opening up in that area.
WNGC is not changing,it's so popular wit the listeners especially up the north Georgia mountains who might not be able to pick up kicks or bull.
