Is 3D TV on the way?

I remember back in 1982 whern Washignton DC's WDCA-TV channel 20 and WPGC-FM teamed up to present a movie in 3-D. I think it was the Creature of the Black Lagoon or one of those 50's 3-D flicks. Some dj from WPGC went on WDCA and told the viewers how to adjust their set to watch the movie in 3D with their glasses that they had picked up from their local 7-11 store.

Even though both WDCA and WPGC claimed the showing of a movie in 3D on channel 20 was "very successful", WDCA never did it again.

I seem to remember an episode of Home Improvement also did a 3D show. In fact, I still have the glasses. I don't recall it being all that great though (especially compared to 3D in movie theaters in the 50's). Maybe if it had been on a big screen HD monitor it would have looked better.

...and then there's the gag about how all TV in Washington is already in a 3-D process, but the FCC doesn't realise it because all the Commissioners are one-dimensional ;D ...
