Is "98-7" the new KROQ-2?

Every time I tune in this station it seems more and more like KROQ to me. Sure, there are some differences but they seem to be getting small and smaller everyday. They copy KROQ's presentation too in a lot of ways, for example their top of the hour ID sounds almost exactly like KROQ's. Now they're even copying KROQ's block party weekends with their own "Rockstar weekends" with "Rock blocks." The only difference really is they don't talk as much as KROQ. Are they trying to fool people into thinking they're listening to KROQ? I guess they might not know but the PPM will. If they really wanted to build a radio station they should do something different and new...not copy something that's already being done on a different frequency.

Come on, this is Clear Channel, not a radio innovator.

It's nothing new to copy success. Radio has been doing that since its inception and it continues in movies, television, magazines, well, you get the point. It's human nature, nothing new. Even CBS does it. So do all the others. The only surprise here is that no one went up against KROQ long ago.

Indie 1031 aren't they more of a direct competitor? I moved here in june of 2000 and i do enjoy la radio.

I don't really see Indie as a direct competitor. They don't seem to be as tightly programmed, plus their signal limits them. If they're going to really compete directly they need more coverage and would have to re-focus their music and programming. Personally I like Indie and I LOVE Jonesy's Jukebox. It's a great little niche station, but to compete with the big boys you need more watts.

We need Indie 103 for what they are and if they were not limited by their signal they would be in the hands of corporate radio and would not be as "unfocused". I can still remember a day when the different jocks on the same station had a different focus and you tuned in at certain times for that one special one that hit all your buttons. Jonesy's Jukebox is a treasure that couldn't happen on BIG radio today. In this case more watts = more conformity.

I agree, Indie is a treasure. My point was that I don't see them as a direct, head to head competitor for the exact reasons you just listed. It is true; if the signal were better it would be in the hands of corporate radio. But in a way, they are. It's just that the corporation that owns them has few English radio stations and is primarily a Spanish broadcasting company. It's cool that they have tried to fill a hole in the market, even if it's got limited reach.

That's true. I guess though I was thinking more along the lines that if they want to beat KROQ they should do something different. Copying an established station in the same maket is not going to bring a station to the top. Then again KYSR is not clear channel's biggest priority I suppose.

If it's not their biggest priority it should be on the list at least. Go back a few years and no matter what Ryan Seacrest's spin doctors would tell it was being beaten by KBIG. Then they gutted KBIG's playlist to protect STAR and 98.7 came up a bit, but then they made more changes that only hurt it. They've mishandled so many of their stations here in LA that it's become sort of a joke. Now they've brought in a guy who was out of a job with the company in SF to help them? Makes no sense. At least they cut the budget. Dropping Danny and then Jamie cut 2 million dollars or so, but now it's being so totally run on the cheap. Same with KBIG. Jockless at night, voice tracked in the afternoon, and I'll bet they'll try to make cuts at the few real winning stations they have in LA next. Hope I'm wrong.

They (Clear Channel) could be doing a sort of toe in the water to check the temperature rather than plunging in so to speak. It is not uncommon to have a lower rated station try to emulate the more listened to competition. They could have taken on country when KZLA flipped but that wasn't going to get the numbers. They could clone KIIS but that would be shooting themselves in the foot. They could bring in other formats but for some reason that seems to not be under consideration in this market.

In any event the KROQ of today is not your dad's KROQ and therefore while Indie 103 could have been a sort of competition in the old days (within their limited area) they are not in any way duplicating today's KROQ. Besides being a low coverage signal they are not any competition for their sister stations and as long as the needles are moving, costs are down and it's being listened to, which it obviously is, it will likely remain as it is.
