Is 990 Still Cursed?

OK you sages out there. I haven't heard a thing since 'The Cafe' went and tucked her skirt between her knees and left town? Is there ever going to be a serious player on that frequency? I know a LOT of women at AWRT that still wish that format had taken off.

We can only wish and speculate. I would like to see the current producers board ops ,etc who have not gotten paid just walk out enmasse . Leave Thom there 24-7 to try and make it work.

"Thom" can't make that abomination of a morning show work. Tried to listen for 5 minutes this morning, in 5 minutes he said "this is the all new sports fan 990" 6 times, talked about 7 different topics, and slammed Phil Bennett (SMU head coach) who he proceeded to announce would be a guest soon. That crap is completely unlistenable.

After The Cafe, the line-up of Don Imus, Kevin McCarthy, Mike Fisher and David Gold never showed up in the ratings. Mr. KNON isn't going to make it work either.

Gee, 3 guys who failed to draw ratings on better signals failed to draw ratings on a crappy signal? Who woulda thunk it?

What's scary is that I've got a friend(a female... will bring an interesting perspective) who's signed on to do a sports talk show on 990 beginning in September. I tried to warn her about paychecks being non-existent....

;)

You got something in your eye? :D

Do tell... what up with Cafe. Any comebacks in order, paychecks aside?

I wish I had something regarding this "Cafe" person / thing you speak of but I don't know what that is.
:(

The lineup with Kevin McCarthy and David Gold was a good one.

When the radio station doesn't have money for promotions like billboards or TV spots, what can you do?

My call on that one would be to do things that will get the station "mentions" in the newspaper or TV news.

Kind of like the way Ed Busch got coverage in the news when he decided to run for city council after leaving WFAA radio.

While Ed was saying, "Try to keep my name out of the news now," it was also giving WFAA free mentions every time the story came up. People started tuning in to NewsTalk 57 to see how they would react the next day.

Apparently, the checks are a huge issue as one of the mid-day shows has suddenly been changed. Things that make ya go hmmmmmmmmmm :)

990 will be a dud frequency unless one of the big ownership groups buys it.
There's too much wrong with it for a small operator to get enough cash to fix it.

Well if the frequency is a dud then the talent on that station at present matches it. Hey zanylady(princess) you gone already? If not, WHY NOT?!?!

First, the Zany Sports Lady and the Sports Princess (Kate Delaney) are two different people.

That being said, with the departure of the short-lived Tom Gully, they're the best thing on the air by a mile at 990.

And the Sports Princess wasn't on the air this morning.

Re: Is 990 Still Cursed? No...if used as local to McKinney, Bonham, Greenville

Hello All,
990 is not cursed.  990 needs to be used as a local station for Collin, Fannin, and Hunt Counties...because for signal range day and night.  You could run a low budget station with local programming for the areas....like high school football (SPORTS), local news, church services on Sunday's, different types of music formats in two hour blocks.  These areas need to local station....Next Media KLAK 97.5 McKinney/Tom Bean needs to look at buying this station or run this station as local format station.

Dan-The-MAN!!!
The North TEXAS RADIO MAN!!!

I guess maybe the real question is what format is lacking here
in DFW that is not readily available by way of satellite radio?

What you can't get in one place, you can get in another, for
a very cheap price....

FWIW, The Sports Princess, after being absent Monday, has been back on the last two mornings at 990.

To the station's four listeners, I'm sure that's great news. For the Princess herself, I imagine it's not so thrilling, considering the huge ten second pauses her co-host takes to read the paper and then repeat it.

The Mobile DJ Politician

Lico Reyes has an article about himself in Wikipedia. You can check it out at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lico_Reyes

Lico ran for U.S. Congress a couple of years ago as a Democrat.

If you'll read further down the page in the Wikipedia article, it contains the following two sentences. Taking credit for the Mobile DJ's that popped up during the Disco Fad of the 1970s kind of reminds me of the time Al Gore tried to take credit for inventing the Internet. Here's the sentence:

Lico is credited as founder of the Portable DJ industry in the USA by Dunn & Bradstreet, Positively Texas (CBS), the Underground shopper and Fort Worth Petroleum Club. This industry now employs tens of thousands of DJ's and stage hands and is a multi BILLION $ industry in America.
