Is a "Classic Cartoon Channel" in the (Dream)Works?

Reuters reports that DreamWorks Animation SKG (the "Shrek" films and "Madagascar 3") is considering creating its own DreamWorks cable channel after agreeing to buy Classic Media, adding characters such as "Casper the Friendly Ghost," "Rocky and Bullwinkle," and "Lassie", among others. Read more:

(As you'll find by the sketchy details, this is still in the early stages of development, but I'd say it looks promising.)

What would this mean for the Luken channels that already carry Classic Media's shows (especially PBJ, which is owned in part by Classic)?

I'd have to wonder aboout the long term prospects of any cartoon-heavy channel Dreamworks launches.

They start off without access to the toons of the two most important and popular producers (Disney and Warner), each of which has its own cable channel (Disney Channel and Cartoon Network, respectively). Cartoon Network also has the Tom and Jerry library and a number of recent toon series.

Then the most watched current cartoons, including Simpsons and Family Guy, are still in broadcast network prime time and will remain on Fox for years to come, as well as in syndication to local broadcast stations.

So the choices for product will be somewhat limited...
