Is anybody home at WAKR?

Listening to the Guardians game on 1590 Sunday and after the game was done, WAKR does their closing list of sponsors with: "This INDIANS game was brought to you by the following...."....not once, but twice! Really? 5-6 months after they announce the new name of the ball club and you can't be bothered to update the team name? Sheesh, if I was the team owner and had heard that I'd probably yank their affiliation and hand it off to some other Akron station.....not there their are a lot to choose from,

Team management didn't initiate the change. MLB did. The Cleveland baseball club resisted pressure to change the name nearly as long as the Washington football club did. The Indians' logo -- a grinning, red-faced, big-nosed caricature -- was only retired a year or so before the name change. If management could turn the clock back and reinstate "Indians" and "Chief Wahoo," it would do so in a heartbeat, as the surge of celebratory purchasing of newly available "Indians" gear would outstrip whatever surge of buying "Guardians" merch is currently happening. To present itself as a paragon of correct thought would be nothing but hypocrisy. A memo to WAKR management is all I'd expect to happen.

Not freaking out over it. I think "Guardians" is a stupid name, prefer Indians myself. My issue is with it being sloppy radio. Same is if they played a weather forecast from two months ago or a news from 3 months ago. It's SLOPPY radio. It's like WAKR saying "We don't like what the new team name is so we're going to call it whatever we want." Same as if they play a song and tell the songwriter "We don't like the lyrics of your tune so we rewrote them to what we want." Or an advertiser "We don't think you know what your or your customers want so we'll do it the way we think it should be done, not the way you want it." Or maybe they think no one is listening to them so why bother correcting any mistakes?

Don't freak out over it. People will be still calling them the Indians for a long time, including me. It is sad that the woke/pc media forced the name change. The vast majority of Native Americans were OK with the name, but the woke/pc media never bothered to mention that. They only showed the handful of protesters outside the ballpark on opening day every year. It is also sad that we no longer have a sense of humor in our country. Everyone is offended by something.
I'm with you! On the Bob Frantz show, prior to the name change, he had a Native American group on who were in favor of the team keeping the century old + name of The Cleveland Indians. The main reason they came on was so that they could tell Bob, and us listeners, that they approached Cleveland Indians management and ownership and were denied a meeting. How fair is that? Not at all is the answer.

Not even giving the other side a fair hearing was despicable. Shame on the team and its owners. I wear a Cleveland Indians T-shirt on game days.

Yes, terribly unfair to WAKR. Now they'll have to spend 3.5 minutes of someone's time to redo this billboard.

Likely an automation error. The Guardians Radio Network is set up so affiliates don’t have to live-assist board-op if they don’t have to (AFAIK WAKR still does?). I highly doubt it was anything intentional.

As for the name change… eh. Life goes on. I soured on Chief Wahoo as a mascot in recent years and really don’t mind it being gone.
