Is anybody listening to kndd this morning?

the morning show is temporary... lasting this week only

the thinking behind this was to get some of the areas bigger musical personalities (eddie spaghetti, sean nelson, john roderick) and have them fill in on mornings while also auditioning new hosts (which is happening in the coming weeks). we knew full well that it wasn't going to be a slick well oiled machine, but sorta liked the punk rock approach of having some rock guys come in and do their thing. for better or worse, it's better than week four of "best of ac" after he had already signed off.

we had 2 days notice that carolla was leaving. as most of you know, that is a tough hand to be dealt. are there better options? probably. maybe not. with all due respect....robin & maynard are not ;)

please lay off dan pounder. he is a hard working 23 year old kid that loves radio who was thrust into a position that opens him up for criticism on boards like this. blame station management, blame me, blame the economy....whatever, but take it easy on him. it's not his fault. he is green, he knows it...but was asked by the station to step up temporarily until a more permanent solution could be found, and that is exactly what he did. we can all hope and pray to be surrounded by people with pounders work ethic and attitude wherever we work. however, he does have a bad haircut.

Actually Harms, I wasn't criticizing Eddie Spaghetti or any of those guys when I said "WTF?". In fact, I couldn't think of a better way to steal some thunder from KEXP than to get some local musicians to take over the station. Might expose listeners to some truly creative local/indie music while they're at it......We need MORE of that on 107.7 MHz.....

(eddie spaghetti, sean nelson, john roderick)

I'm a 31 year old guy who likes radio, and loves music and I've never heard of these nobodys. I would have much rather listened to the RERUNS of Carolla for years than put in some "green" college jock, and some guy who's never done radio before.

Anybody remember the "good old days" when you actually had to have TALENT (crazy i know) to work on a large market radio station?

Bring back DJ NO NAME!!

Well No Name was actually a "green" college jock. Obviously he was one of the very few that had a special talent. Let me add Dick Rosetti, Andy Savage, Bill Reid, Jim Keller. Last I checked these guys are available.

From the same genius minds that brought you "ozomatli in the morning" now comes "Sean Nelson from Harvey Danger" next week on kndd.

Doesn't this just confuse the audience? What is going on over there?

I really don't think this is that bad of a move. Sure the shows being put on don't sound the greatest, but I think it generates more buzz this way rather than just having a board-op running 4 straight hours of music. As for confusing people, they are constantly running promos saying these are "guest hosts" while they find their next morning team. Nothing confusing about that. The only thing left to figure out is how long it will take to find a new team and will they go the syndicated route again or have a local show.

Re: kndd

If it is "about the music"- todays music- then low-key djs, "one of you" young adults makes sense- stylistically, philosophically and financially. It is their generation's station. Pounder has a decent voice and isn't full of himself. I see some appropriate things in common or cues taken from Harms who is one of the well=developed, solid younger voices on the air. He fits what they are doing.

A lot of folks might want the 80s and 90s back full force- including me- but that would be a different kind of station. Ultimately I don't think the two don't really fit. Alice In Chains and Screaming Trees are different than Franz Ferdinand or Metric. Both were college rock in their day but it is metal to pop. I'll listen to both but the former is a bit too rare these days even though I hear a few more hints of it on the end lately. Are they just throwing a bone or genuinely trying or thinking of trying to get back 30 and 40 year olds?

I think KISW's heavy invest in "talent" belies concern about the music or maybe more specifically sponsor relation to / feelings about the music. Yeah they want to reach that market but they probably feel better attaching their ads to a personality driven station rather than purely an active rock station "about the music" at least during the weekday.

Between KNDD, KISW and KZOK there is stuff that is underplayed or missing. 96.5 has tried various strategies in relation to these 3. Each had some value but weren't quite right. KMTT is no longer in the "rock' discussion much or at all to me. Maybe somebody new grabs the 80s and 90s in a focused rock way. I don't really understand why it has dropped off so much. The first or true baby-boomers have ruled the media landscape for decades. Classic rock at least at KZOK virtually refuses to allow anything in after 1985. Those born after 1980 have their scene and pretty much in their own control. I think those born in the 60s and early 70s probably get squeezed / slighted some between the classic and the new, especially considering this should be my generation's peak or near peak moment of influence. But that is just my perspective.

RockJazz,

I agree with you. I just don't see the need to target such a young demo these days. There are already a ton of advertisers thats don't buy ads on the End because of the demo the station targets. Now there are even fewer, especially with the economy in the toilet and companies cutting back on their advertising budget. Skew a bit older and suddenly you are opening up more possibilities for the station to make money. You don't have to necessarily have to drop all new music, but make the station primarily 90's with a handful of songs from the 80's tossed in. Then when it comes to the new millenium, be very selective on which songs make the cut. Sure KISW plays some 90's alt as well but some listeners might not want to sit through Metallica, Mudvayne, and Motley Crue to hear it. Sure he Mountain plays some REM, U2, etc. but some listeners might not want to sit through Colbie Caillat and John Mayer to hear it. I think the End could sound great once again, but I just don't see the need to ignore alot of the older stuff. Like Rockjazz mentioned, I am starting to hear a mix with a tad more focus on the older stuff. I think more needs to be done but it is a step in the right direction.

NEWS FLASH!
'Young People' don't listen to Thee End too much these days.I sure the PD sits in his office and believes that, but they don't.

While I could understand if the End wanted to be the generation station for a slice of those currently under 25, if the reality is that it isn't working with enough advertisers, then if they want to rethink it and come back after the 30 & 40 year olds who could come back for a careful selection of 90s (and maybe older) and today more focused than Jack or others on grunge and certain other parts of alt "rock" I'd of course be fine with that shift. If they won't do it because they don't want to take from KISW or KMTT then I guess things will probably stay the same.

If KZOK isn't going to extend classic rock beyond 1985 because of Jack FM then I'll probably give up urging change.

Harms -

Just wanted to note that I think Pounder sounds good middays - good voice, nice delivery. I just wish (and hope) that he has the opportunity to develop in a nice weekend timeslot, like you did, before he get stuck middays in market 14.
