Is anyone else worried about The Vibe

The station sounds great except I am worried they are going to fall into the typical failed dance station model...

How so? Adding way too much euro-trance type stuff.

I have been listening and they are clearly moving away from the house/dance remix type sound towards the euro-trance sound which will, IMO, doom the station to continually low ratings.

Thoughts?

I didn't say I was smarter than you. I respect what you're doing and The Vibe is clearly the best dance station in the U.S. right now.

However, I'm worried that the station will be going in too much of a euro direction, which like I said will certainly doom it to failure. Name one example of a euro sounding station that did well in the U.S... that formula doesn't work. To succeed it seems to me you need to keep it mainstream enough to appeal to the average listener. You aren't programming for dance fans like me...

I'll give you a few examples. I'm glad the songs are tested, but I just don't see songs like these appealing to a mainstream audience:
Dash Berlin - Never Cry Again
Aquapura - Seventeen
Those are a couple examples out of the two ours... Again, if they are testing then that's great. Are you playing the new dance-pop song from Chris Brown, Akon, Taio Cruz/Kesha, BEP, Mohombi? I know I will get eaten alive for bringing that up on this forum but I really think that is the only way for a dance station to work in the U.S. The minute it gets too underground, it won't succeed.

Thanks for what you're doing and good luck.

You cite 2 songs and say we're too euro-trance??? Aquapura is a mainstream song in every country but America. Dash Berlin isn't euro-trance, it's pure trance.

Chris Brown - Yes. we were 2nd in the market.
Akon - we were first in the market. Guetta produced.
Taio Cruz/Kesha - song isn't strong anywhere.. medium in most markets. why should we play a so-so song from CHR. We only play the CHR smashes.
BEP - song is week and will flame out.
Mohombi - too removed from 'dance' to consider.

We have global DJ's in the city all the time.

Given the obsticals KVBE has, we're on target. We use the tools we have, and make adjustments as needed.

Name 1 dance station in this country that failed because it played euro-trance. I can't think of any.

Two songs out of the two hours you gave me. I'm thinking of the "new music" promos you are running -- almost all of it sounds pretty euro to me, that's why I'm worried the station is moving in that direcftion. BEP will be a hit... Mohombi is getting played by Fresh FM in Holland, pretty major station there. BTW, Party 93.1 in Miami didn't do well with the euro sound?

Now I need to go back to the Atlanta board because this raises more questions about WWWQ (sorry to get off topic). WWWQ excludes quite a few hits (and even goes as far to literally say they are NOT hits) because they are not in the TOP 20.

Yet, they do play the Taio Cruz & Ke$ha song. I seriously do not understand the Atlanta CHR market at all.

Actually, he only promised the songs in the top 20 and did say in the recorded email that anything outside of the top 20 is a "toss up", so I guess they could play other tested optional material for that market, but will only promise anything that's within the top 20. Anyway, whatever works for them... I just wish they'd be more "risky" than that and play other optional chr hits that are not in the top 20.

Better yet, maybe it's time for a dance lean top 40 in Atl...

Party in Miami was fine. Owners wanted to make more money from a full-market stick. Party didn't fail.

Fresh-FM - boy talk about a euro-trance market!!! Fresh is a blip compared to 538 there.

Our 'new music' sweeps promote songs that are in a night rotation. It's a way to expose those song with small hooks during the day to build awareness.

Based on market exposure of CHR, we're right where we need to be with our pop songs.

about Dirty Bit... if market demands it, we'll play it. but song sucks in every way and i'll wait for demand. i will not lead on that one.

Great! I hope the mainstream audience can warm up to them and sustain the station.

We'll see.. I think that one will be pretty huge. Catchy, and the mom in the car is going to recognize the hook and keep the station on.

or turn it off because it's annoying

Funny the mom was brought up because every time it came on with my mom around, she always sang the chorus, then came the "shocking moment" when she discovered it was by Black Eyed Peas.

Whether or not this will help dance, I don't know, because on facebook I saw someone from either KMVQ or KYLD talking about how Black Eyed Peas "fell off" and another radio person on twitter saying anyone who likes that song is "#rainbow".

Of course, I like the song overall by default because it's another excuse for chr and rhythmic formats to HAVE to play, yet again, another uptempo hit.

Just a guess, but I bet they will be more likely to turn off the unfamiliar euro songs :)

Unfamiliar euro songs.... you mean where nearly all of the US dance labels get their music? How about that unfamiliar euro song "Stereo Love"... #35 right not on CHR. or the Cascada & September songs that crossed over...euro songs. Yolanda B Cool..actually Australian, but is huge in euro land. I'd rather play an unfamiliar euro hit than a crappy domestic song.

Please... that is the worst song I've ever heard from BEP. It's just some crappy song with no feeling/excitement. The song is likely going to die out by Thanksgiving.

I can say that none of the dance stations that changed formats recently did so because dance failed.

Party 93.1 - Cox saw a format hole for rock when 94.9 changed formats
95.3 Party - It evolved into a hip hop format gradually, as hip hop was starting to dominate the pop charts
Energy 92.7 SF - Flying Bear overpaid for the station and the bad economy reduced advertising revenue across the board for all stations, but unfortunately they didn't have the financial resources to weather the storm
Energy Arizona - They found a format hole for hip hop with their upgraded signal
Pulse 87 - Station started off $4 million in debt, Mega Media was mismanaged and then went bankrupt
Super 91.7 - Politics forced the school district to fire the PD of the radio station after he spoke out about running for school board

Edger...don't you dare change a thing...why mess with perfection??? Vibe sounds fantastic!! Philadelphia needs tthis exact format!!! it would blow Wired and Q102 outof the water.......Seriously though the two sample hrs Edger produced say it all.
