Is anyone still having fun in radio?

I read post after post of people saying how bad radio is, how companies don't care and personalities are the walking dead. Threads are dedicated to saying how bad certain traffic reporters are even if it is there first radio job. How good were you on your FIRST gig, I was not good.

I for one am having fun in radio. I will not mention the station, but the company is good and I have fun every day at work. I look forward to going on-air. I like looking at stupid websites to do show prep, talking to crazy people and recording their calls for other jocks to listen to. Every post seems to be negative. I wonder how many people posting here are in radio and how many are bitter ex jocks that wonder what might have been.

I am also a realist and know my job may be gone tomorrow, but until then I will have as much fun as I can. Positive energy is contagious and we have a staff that proves it. I just hope radio is still fun for some.

I know prep sites are held closely but if anyone has a good one they want to pass along I will listen.

Is there enough "fun" to pass around? :-\

I know I still have a blast when I'm on the air. It's easy for me because I get to work with 2 of my favorite people in the world, we each love what we do & who we do it with, and we each usually have a unique view on things going on.

I've had it the other way, too: Working with someone who's lazy & doesn't want to be there...or working for a company that won't give you the resources to win but still expects you to compete with the big boys. THOSE situations can be horrible. And no doubt, some days just SUCK!

But seriously, this is RADIO! This is what I wanted to do from the first time I heard a voice on the other end of that bumpy thing in the middle of the dash board. If you can't have fun doing THIS gig, please, I beg you...get out of the business! You...are KILLING it!

I grumbled a bit at times, but I loved every second I got to sit in a radio station. To think that I spent 10 years going to work, and never once considered it "work"... I should really count that blessing more often.

There is not a cooler job with cooler people to be found anywhere than at Clear Channel's Harrisburg facility, a place I (almost literally) called home since 2001. So while I no longer have fun in radio, it's only because I'm not in radio, and surrounded by those grand people, anymore.

So to all of you having fun...live it, brothers and sisters. As you know, it can vanish sooner than you can say -----

It's just a tough time right now because of companies are in way over their heads. Bought too many stations...have too much debt.
Good people losing their jobs. And...poor upper management that alllows disfunctional individuals to force out quality employees. Yeah..a great time to be in the business.

Fun was officially eliminated from the job lexicon when corporations became involved in mass ownership. Creativity and individualship soon followed, along with personality.

I have been in radio 30 years, 26 of them on the same station and I am having just as much fun now, if not more, than 30 years ago! Make no mistake, I've been blessed to work for and with great people. And over the years, there have been peaks and valleys, the good and not so good times. The only constant has been change. My station has gone from mom and pop to corporate. My cluster has gone from 2 to 5 stations. I've gone from records and carts to cds and now digital. I'll bet there are a lot of people in radio today who've never worked without a pre-programmed music log. I remember when music logs came into being. Many jocks at the time felt that their freedom had been infringed on, although when jocks had choice in the music, they mostly made choices for the wrong reasons. A lot of jocks really can get stuck with a way of doing things. Often times they think a song should remain in a station's library "..because we've always played it". Radio is still a great way to touch people lives, even when voice tracked. You know, there are very few things you can't do voice tracked that you can do live. Have fun, do your prep, remember there is always someone listening and when you see the change train coming, hop on board or it is just a matter of time before it runs you over. When you hear someone say "...that ain't radio.." in reference to the way radio is done today, it's probably time for that person to get out. Be the agent of change if your position allows. Remember, we only hate change when it is thrust upon us.

And I think you made a very good point: Being blessed to work with "great people" is the KEY to having fun in radio. I've been in radio for 30 years, too, and I can count 2 cases where I've worked with great people & have had great fun in this medium. I'm more skeptical of "corporate" radio & as a result, sill work for "mom & pop" because I choose job security over a large salary. I choose serving the local community over being popular. I prefer empowering local people over empowering the corporation. Yes, when all of the elements are in place, everyone (from the jocks to the station owners) will have fun in radio. I think when we lose sight of having fun & start trying to manipulate numbers, inflate rates, or find a way to step on competition, that's when the fun starts to diminish. Radio is all about serving PEOPLE - whether they are your listeners, your employees, your employers, or your advertisers. It's about serving.

IMHO, those who are still in radio are sooooo lucky. Count your blessings! I've been trying to land my next gig for the past 10 years. That's right, my last radio job was 10 years ago this past August. Not that I haven't tried. I almost got hired back into radio twice, but so far, nada. Of course, my decade-old aircheck doesn't help much, either...

I wish I was still in radio. Quit my gig to move to Miami because my wife got a new gig. Worked part time for a year, but had to go and get full time work, or what people call a real job. Been searching for a full time radio job for 3 years now. I'd be having fun if someone was willing to give me an opportunity. But don't assume I am untalented. I left as the No. 1 rated personality in the market in my time slot. Just not easy to get work anymore. Anyone hiring? hahahaha :(

Not so Young anymore Will

People I know in the biz tell me two things: 1) The job market should open up a bit in the next year or so and 2) Stay away from large companies that start with "C"... 8)
