Is Bob Grant packing it in?

Bob Grant was heard saying at the end of his early Sunday afternoon show on WABC today (9/16) that he was making an announcement next week "that a lot of you won't like." The moderator of another message board that covers NYC radio declared that it's because next Sunday's show will be Grant's farewell broadcast. Is that true, or is it just speculation on the board moderator's part? And if Grant is leaving, is it his decision, or the decision of TPTB at Cumulus?

Anyone know?

And if it is true and Grant is really hanging up his headphones, how does everyone feel about it?

If he is and it's his choice, how can you fault the guy? He's been doing it forever, pretty much created the entire WABC format and all of the syndicated shows that follow his template.

I wish Bob the best in whatever he does. He has proven himself 99 times and if he wants to spend some quiet time with his family or whatever it is, all the more power to him. I will miss him on the air, but we can't all expect him to keep going until he dies on the air either.

Bob has been doing radio for a long time and he isn't getting any younger. As a big fan I have to say he's been sounding tired lately and has hinted at some health issues. I think Bob knows its time to hang it up. He will be missed but I wish him good lick and God speed!

I've been listening to Bob Grant since he came to New York in 1970. I hardly agreed with him,but he was such a dynamic personality. I hope the decision to leave was his. Weekends on talk stations are pretty dismal, but it was nice to have a live, local familiar voice on Sunday afternoon from 12 to 2PM.

I have a feeling his two hour shift will be replaced with infomercials.

Grant is 83 years old and recently had surgery. His health could be taking a toll on him.

If Bob is going into retirement, he's put in a good 40 plus years on New York radio that not many broadcasters have accomplished with some exceptions like William B. Williams on WNEW-AM, Cousin Brucie, Dan Ingram, Harry Harrison, and of course Stan Brooks on WINS 1010 and a few others.

Thanks,

I don't know why Grant's show is ending, but Grant has had health problems the last couple of years. He wrote on March 18, 2010,

"I feel rather strange writing this since it has been what seems like an eternity since I wrote my last column.

The reason for the sabbatical is my battered left shoulder which was injured several weeks ago when I allowed a very large piece of furniture to hit my shoulder with such force and weight that it tore the tendon leading from my rotator cuff to the rest of the left arm.

It was my first opportunity to see the grotesque sight of the inside of my shoulder. If I didn’t know what I was looking at, I would have believed it was a photo taken by a NASA rover on a far off planet.

The doctor explained why I was in such pain and was tactful enough to tell me if I were younger he would recommend an operation. But, in view of my having attained a very avuncular maturity, he did instead recommended something they euphemistically call “rehab.”

So, several times each week I go to the Ocean Orthopedic Hospital and subject myself to torture in order to regain some use of my once great left arm. While all this has been going on, I developed a serious tooth and gum problem which is too grotesque to even subject you to it, let alone myself."

Now that I am feeling better, and now that my doctor, the great urologist Paul Lowe, has said I am getting better and even has given me permission to drive the car again, I think the best way for me to celebrate is to share my experience with you. Back in April, while I was in Cape May, New Jersey, I was asked to speak on behalf of Senate candidate Joe Kyrillos. I made my speech at the Congress Hall right in the heart of Cape May. After I had given my speech and since I was not feeling well, I returned to my hotel room. I had a large unit of several rooms but was not able to enjoy my “digs.” Nevertheless, those of you who have come to know me know that I tell it like it is. I do not believe that just because I am supposed to be some sort of celebrity, I am not supposed to share intimate details of my problem. I am just another human being and therefore I am subject to the same problems all the rest of you are. So, I was forced to walk around the apartment all night long. I couldn’t sleep and I didn’t want to disturb Josephine who was very tired and had fallen asleep in the bedroom. So, all I could do was keep walking and occasionally step into the bathroom to try my luck. But, my body would not cooperate.

The next morning, even before the sunrise, we got in the car and I drove all the way north to where we live in Ocean County. The next day I was scheduled for a necessary tests including an MRI. The MRI showed that I had a blockage and something had to be done right away or else things were going to back up and that would mean serious problems. Eventually they took me to the hospital where the technicians went to work and lodged a catheter in the right place, and thus began my comeback from hell. I will happily spare you some needless details, but at this point I am happy to tell you I am feeling fine and in a few weeks, hopefully, I can live without the catheter.

Why have I told you even this much? For one thing, since you are a great group of friends of mine, I wanted to share something with you. The second reason is to remind you that in spite of all our complaining, I don’t think our medical people are a bad bunch. I have found them to be professional and caring. I cannot say enough for the nurses who were assigned to come to my house almost daily. These ladies are professional and they know when to scold me and when to praise me. So to Debbie and her colleagues I can only say. . . thanks for being who you are and making me do the right thing to get better and stay better!

Bob Grant

Straight ahead!

From a reliable source, Bob Grant is not retiring, but only taking a month off.

Thanks,

Let's hope Bob Grant is in good health, if what Kevin writes above is true.

Let's also hope that for that month of absence, WABC actually has a guest host in Grant's time slot, as opposed to four infomercials.
