IS BRITNEY SPEARS WORTH $15 MILLION TO "X FACTOR"

Is the secret to these talent shows finding the best, highest priced singer/judge who will sign up?
That doesn't appear to be the winning formula Ed McMahon and other talent pioneers used.

An article pointed out the other day that most of these contestants are just good karaoke singers
at best. Most can't write songs or play an instrument. Most fade into the shadows once the show is
over. YET, America can't get enough of it.......go figure. ?????

Being the best doesn't factor into it. Is Madonna the best singer? No, but she has had a long career, 'cause she knows how to sell herself.

Janet Jackson is mediocre. As I've said before, look at the episode of "Diff'rent Strokes" where Willis has a band and auditions his girlfriend, played by Jackson and Kimberly played by Dana Plato. Plato easily bests her singing. Jackson was markets as a dance video act, precisely because her voice was weak and she couldn't compete directly with the likes of Whitney Houston. But Janet Jackson, until Michael's death, actually bested him in chart rankings, airplay and sales.

A person with great talent and no charisma is not likely to go as far as a likable person with above average but not great talent

I'm not sure that statement is true. There seems to be a certain demo that loves the Idol/Voice type of show but fragmentation in the non-teen demo's tend to spread other viewers out so that these "talent" shows get great percentage ratings.

The non-stop publicity, particularly for Idol and 'X' on Fox outlets undoubtedly has an effect.
