Is changing your format the norm these days?

Having lost my employment recently,I've been doing alot of driving back and forth again from Bakes to Fresno.

It's given my the opportunity to listen to alot of morning shows and just stations in general for that matter.

I still enjoy Bob and Tom the most.I like Pirate's music as well as The Max.

Gradowitz is the same ol-same-ol so he gets my ear from time to time(except for this week when they did that very long telethon and tears). I feel bad for sick kids as much as the next person but I heard the afternoon girl start crying yesterday and then she made me feel like I was a bad person for not having called in to give the money I didn't have,I felt so horrible about it and the kids I just turned the radio off.

I've grown pretty fond of Rachel and Dustin now even though they don't match at all with the music.Bob and Sherry annoy me to no end,but like I said I'm not really a light rock type of guy, and while Meathead and his gang have decent interviews they RARELY play any music!

The whole reason for this post though is that I've noticed on the weekends that KGFM plays OLDIES? I thought it was a one time thing but we just flipped it on again and whaddya' know? Why do they do this? It seems very confusing. I'm also curious if there are other stations that change their programming to something else on weekends only?

In Los Angeles, the old KLSX 97.1 would run talk during the week and classic rock on weekends. KGIL 1260 does the same thing with talk all week and standards on weekends. Other stations I have come across day part their programming too; business stations sometimes will do sports in the late afternoons and evenings, or oldies on weekends. Doing Oldies on the weekends occurs more often than you might think, and a good fit for KGFM. Classic Top 40 seems to be the new oldies format of choice; KMVE 106.9 California City - Antelope Valley is now running the format after moving the Spanish format over to 96.1 KCEL Mojave.

I was in Bakersfield a couple weekends ago (from LA) and noticed the Oldies on KGFM, too. They sounded good. I also thought KLLY was much more CHR in the evenings (maybe just Friday & Saturday?) than during the day, when they are normally Hot AC. I guess it's not that much of a stretch to flip between AC and Oldies (KGFM) or Hot AC and CHR (KLLY) as they are "neighboring" formats anyway.

As a side, I liked listening to KKBB 99.3, too. Bakersfield and Fresno are great towns for radio, if you ask me.

Especially compared to a place like Las Vegas; the arm pit of the radio dial! Considering the market size,
and pay there is insulting too! You could make more money flipping burgers at a McDonald's in Needles.

In Bakersfield you can still listen to local talk all day on locally owned radio stations; Flip to a country station and still listen to a locally owned radio station that is not voice tracked all day long; Not many markets the size of Bakersfield where you can do that in 2009.
