Is Comedy Is Coming to New York Radio?

For those of you who haven't heard that the comedy format has launched in Boston on 1200 AM as "Matty's Comedy 1200". There's going to be all kinds of speculation that the "Comedy" format will make it into New York City which I'm not sure as of right now. First, WOR is now soon to be own by CC after taking over the defunct Buckley Broadcasting, but there's another one which is in the works. I hope maybe a 24/7 comedy format will work in NYC, I don't know if it will end up on 101.9 or some place else, maybe WFME, not sure right at the moment, but let's hope New York is getting a comedy format from Boston to make its way to NYC. I have no clue on what is going on.

Any thoughts?

Clear Channel's "Comedy Radio 24/7" is horrid IMO. Clips of stand-up comedy randomly played with no rhyme or reason. The comic is identified AFTER the clip is finished and the next one begins. CC seems to put it on AM stations they see as dead weight. Doubtful they would buy a station to put on what clearly is seen as filler material.

No. Not happening in NYC. The Boston station wasn't even getting a cume over 125k and was costing money to run with local talk in AM and PM drive.

The move to comedy in Boston appears to be an "act of desperation." Clear Channel, apparently, is stuck with a 50-kw AM signal that almost nobody listens to, even when it had CC's top talk shows on it like Rush, Beck etc.

So comedy is what you do when the only other option might to be to turn off the power switch and "go dark."

Unlike with music you don't have to pay BMI or ASCAP licensing fees, and you also don't have to pay relatively big bucks for a talented talk show host. Instead, you hire somebody to string comedy clips together, put it all in a computer, and just let it play.

Then you hope it draws enough of an audience to entice enough advertisers to pay enough to keep the whole thing going.

All-comedy is an AM station survival strategy, most major market FMs are doing better than just surviving, and the big NYC AMs are doing too well to consider this kind of move either.

Yes, this is the reason they just purchased WOR ... "Comedy WOR" coming soon... <G> ok just kidding... then again some find the ramblings of Rush, Glenn, and Shawn very funny and humorous.

I resubscribed to Sirius, several of months ago, for Laugh USA and P.O.T.U.S.

"Radio Pup" app has WNWZ 1410 in Grand Rapids and is an All-Comedy format.

I usually figured an all-comedy format was a fad or a stunting. That may be changing.

By the way, don't be surprised to start hearing over the air spots on conventional formats targeting on-line listening, if you haven't already.

I would be stunned if WOR-710 becomes a 24/7 comedy outlet, considering it's strong signal.

WOR likely will stay talk, but with Clear Channel-owned Premiere shows replacing what's there now.

But if CC acquires a second AM station in the market (unless they get 660, 770, 880, or 1010), that second station may well go Comedy 24/7.

To clarify, I didn't mean to suggest WOR would go Comedy. The station in Grand Rapids is on 1410 - hardly a flamethrower.

I listened to 1200 from Boston for a few minutes this morning and just did not care for it. I can not see how this format can be sustained in any major market.

For the record, Buckley Broadcasting is still operating its other stations in areas such as Connecticut, so they are very much not "defunct".
