Is Dance Dead?

I wonder if dance is reall dead?

Mike Pitt from North Adams said this on AIM <Instant Messenger.

Dance is dead...GET OVER IT! YOU ARE NOT WANTED HERE!

good point. i think the sound was premature. it will come back again. hiphop is just the "in" thing at the moment.

...things will turn around...

...........i hope..........

> Dance music since the days of disco will never die.

I agree. Dance will always reinvent itself regardless of critism, trends or styles.

Just like those of us that grew up when B96 was dance. We have to make dance accessible to young ones, and pass it on. Dance will never die, just because we have a few Bigots on Tv critizing "techno" , or a radio jock "burning Disco Records. Doesn't mean a damn thing.

They are repulsed by the liberal music that repulses them, so what? so we keep pushing the music we love and ignore the folks that dont share our passion.

Dance ain't dead. Why are the airing madonna's new song. Isn't that dance music? I'm hearing it alot on KIIS FM AND K B I G FM in Los Angeles. Even the jocks say thats a good song with people calling in the station and saying its a good party dance song. Im evening hearing DHT on those stations. They are going to be at the Weho Carnival too. Thats just my two cents.

Well Put. Simple and to the point, with alot of merit.
I havent tuned into Country MusicTV, or listen to the
regional country station here..for quite some time,
so, to me, country music the better days are behind them.

Same with dance..there is Always some thing to get
excited about..and, the "obscurity"(?sp) of the
"techno" genre..makes the appeal that much more desireable.

>madonna's new song, was aired out on
102.5(for those that know, they "old" majic 102)..

currently, the frequencey, 102.5fm is a hot-ac,
and played madonna's new one..on a friday night..
it was the best thing on at the time!! kickin butt
versus the "party-mix" stations..and, the dj used
dance-friendly beats for bed/bumper music..the
repeating 'instruemental beat' of the vengaboys, atb, and some
thing else-if i heard it, i would know it..

plus, this year, there is a remix of the halloween/micheal myers
song..soo, to say dead..far off. dying slowly of a painful death..
nah..in a slump...maybe!?

In a slump is about right, For this country anyway. The way I see it though, DHT, and the new Maddonna are slowly rising it out of the HOLE, hopefully the momentum keeps going.

Whew! I'm glad you asked that question Russ as I have no idea who he is either. Is he the Carson Daily of the AIM world? LOL

Dance will only become BIGGER!

First off, give me Pitt's AIM and I'll settle this.

Now, dance music does have its peaks and valleys, no question. The music in itself however, despite the naysayers that had wanted this music history since the days of disco, IS NOT DEAD. If anything it will only get BIGGER! It won't be an artist that will do it either. TECHNOLOGY will. And you can thank HD-2 radio when this happens.

As major companies are committing themselves to HD-2, they will have to fill it with programming. Now while in most markets dance music wouldn't get a THOUGHT on the standard terrestrial positions, HD-2 will open up to differing formats and dance music IMHO stands HIGH as one of them. After all, you have CHR stations and Hip-Hop stations. Dance does qualify in the contemporary category. Philadelphia and Miami have such HD-2 stations. It's just a matter of time that other major cities such as Boston, Washington, and areas that you probably won't expect, get on the dance music bandwagon.

It's not going to happen overnight, but it WILL happen.

Re: Is Dance Dead? Really close.

It is not dead, but it is on life support. I can't even play it at parties any more. You play Hip Hop and the floor fills up. You start out with the perennial dance floor favorite "It Takes Two" and finish out the set with a Missy Elliott megamix and the floor is packed. If I play DHT, Darude, Daft Punk, the floor parts like Moses at the Red Sea.

I have personally loved it since the glory days of Disco. I have gone out on a limb to play Euro-dance and Salsoul labeled records in the late 70's as a trainee. Then into 80's Kraftwerk, New Wave (Adam and the Ants, Eurhythmics, and Blondie).
Everything began to change when Planet Rock was released. I played just about anything on the Prelude and Tommy Boy labels.

Dance really went underground and, in my case, I didn't play any real Dance until Frankie Knuckles popularized House Music. That music form sequed into Freestyle (once again, in my case). After Freestyle fell, it was all over for Dance. Dance took on a Euro sound which few Americans tolerate unless they are loaded up on drugs on a Saturday night. Even the majority of these folks would not be caught dead listening to Dance Monday through Thursday.

Lately, a lot of Dance is very repetitious and the lyrics have no meaning to anybody. A lot of it is made by people in other countries and know little English. They practice one or two lines and repeat 30 times.

If it does not catchon soon, it will stay underground for years to come. Of course, some on this board would be fine with that.

> well, it's not fine with me. I'm going to continue my efforts to reach a mainstream audience with dance records that people will enjoy during the Monday through Thursday frame.'DanceFloor" is about as commercial as it gets, while still maintaining a dark venere that prevents it from being outright bubblegum;I think we've found the right ingredients, time will tell.
