Is David Lee Roth's Show Finished??

There have been reports on the Internet over the last few days suggesting that David Lee Roth's syndicated morning show (based at New York's WFNY-92.3) might soon be dropped in favor of a simulcast (with the nasty language bleeped-out) of Opie and Anthony's XM satellite-radio program.

Although I don't fully think an Opie and Anthony simulcast, even in a censored version, would replace Roth, I am beginning to think that Roth will indeed get terminated by CBS Radio and that his show is a goner. The only question seems to be when.

What do you think?? Will CBS pull the plug on Roth soon, and if so, when??

And do you also think Roth's show may have been a mistake??

(I personally think CBS made a huge error in signing Roth to this gig; I feel that all of Howard Stern's replacements should have had extensive experience in radio, especially in doing shows for the young adult men which made-up most of Stern's terrestrial radio audience)

Agreed. But Howard bounced around suburban New York, Hartford, Detroit and DC before W-NNNN-B-C and finally K-Rock and syndication. Because of Howard and other syndicated talent, potential replacements no longer have the chance to get "extensive experience in radio." With all this syndication and automation, radio consumed its young. If Howard was on a 100 stations (as an example, I have no idea of the exact number), that's 100 morning hosts and even more co-hosts and side-kicks who never had the chance to develop. Radio killed the radio star. And personality (plus local content) is what separates radio from satellite. So they hire lawyers, comedians, musicians and former political staffers who then fall on their face. It also shows the contempt radio managers have for on-air talent: Anybody can do it, all we need is a name.

Hey, I'm available for the gig. 16+ years experience in AM FM & TV. I'm just dumb enough to plow ahead when people say it can't be done. My email address is
on my profile page here. Let's talk.

The Ultimate Well Spoken,Obnoxious and Funny Morning Host

Yes, I'll probably be receptive to hosting a morning show eventually; half the people on the board are probably ready to pick up the phone and mix it up with me already...and THAT'S what makes great radio...>

I listened this morning for an hour or so online... does he always play that godawful music for the entire hour while talking over it less than 50% of the time?

Ugh.

I agree it is awful!! I have listened a few times online as well and its just horrible. At least Carolla has some direction on his show and is actually entertaining to listen to. I feel bad for NYC and anyone else who has to hear roth in the morning

Re: The Ultimate Well Spoken,Obnoxious and Funny Morning Host

Maybe if Dave has some down time he should at least get together with Eddy Alex & Michael to re-master the Women & Children First Album.

- and, after he gets fired, he can go on Howard 100 and host a one hour Friday afternoon Rock-n-Roll Show - which is he perfectly suited for, as opposed to 4 hours of ... whatever the hell he is doing now.

David Lee Roth's Show - He's done better radio

short answer, IMO YES, but.....

David Lee Roth did a week of mornings in Boston on WZLX probably as an audition for the NY and syndicated gig. His show was so much better in Boston than the current syndicated show is doing now.

I think there are several reasons for the difference. During his week in Boston he was at a station that already had a basic format. Diamond Dave worked under a (slightly modified) format at WZLX with rules and guidelines. He was under the thumb of the WZLX Program Director Beau Raines. Dave's sidekick/Board Op was Hutch, who was very familiar with the WZLX board, format and philosophy was also a key ingredient. Hutch is with David Lee now but he doesn't seem to have the ability/authority to guide Roth in NY the way he could at WZLX. Roth had his own "producer" who worked closely with the WZLX programming department to make the show the best it could be. Roth had his preferences and influence but not as much as he seems to have with his current show.

I think Roth should take the advice of the "suits" who know radio. Roth should be considered an entertainer. His bosses are the ones that have studied, researched and understand the business of radio. The potential is there for a great show. I heard glimpses of it on WZLX, but even then my opinion on Roth was, WHY?

So, I think that Roth's show will be gone long before his contract is up - IF he continues the way he is going. He should take the advice and direction of the programming folks and he just might have a career as a morning radio host.

Howard also had music up and under him during his early syndicated and NYC days..some ''Best of'' shows used to go that far back into the Howard Archives..

I'm waiting for the ''CBS Mutiny of 2006'' when the PDs and Sales Directors of the 27 stations that carry Rover, Roth and Adam, among others, are summoned to NYC for a ''what the hell do we do now'' summit after the 2006 Spring Book arrives..that could entertaining in a hurry..

What's interesting to note as well as the rekindling of the O/A and Howard feud, which will only intensify the interest in Sat Radio..
