Is Dr. Phil Getting Too Tabloidish?

Does it seem like that Dr. Phil is getting to become tabloidish with his talk show? If Casey Anthony's parents wasn't enough as he has had them on 3 times already but now on today's show he's having Levi Johnston, Bristol Palin's ex-boyfriend/fiance and father of her daughter. Who is he going after next? The Kardashians? Lindsey Lohan? Justin Bieber? O.J. Simpson? Charlie Sheen? The Jacksons about Michael Jackson? The list is endless among those I consider tabloid talk to talk about.

I don't watch the show but it seems like he has changed his show a whole bunch over the years and changed the format from regular people talking about their health to a tabloid junk talk show.

Thoughts about this?

Phil has been tabloid for several years. I've heard young people refer to it as "Jerry Springer" for old people. The Casey Anthony crap was way over the top.

His programs early on were somewhat interesting and seemed much more genuine than the pap that's been on the past couple of years. I quit watching some time ago.

You are right, but as Karen Carpenter said, when asked why did she always sing so low..."The money's in the basement." :)

Nice quote. And so true.

Dr. Phil is navigating the post-Oprah world and dipping his toes into the water. There will be mistakes, for sure.

Can I be the first, (or one of the firsts), to predict Oprah will be back on broadcast TV within two years?

Yeah, I agree. Any show that involves showing the audience the personal emotional and mental problems of real people - is voyeuristic and "tabloidish" by nature, as far as I'm concerned. At it's worst, it's "shadenfreude" (taking pleasure from the misfortunes of others), and I think at the very least, it appeals to viewers' basest instincts.

I'll admit I will occasionally find an episode or two of these shows hard to resist (Hoarders). But really - whether we're watching some high-profile case like Casey Anthony, or just some anonymous messed-up person we've never heard of before - it's really the same thing - just a matter of degree, that's all.

The only syndicated TV Doctor Show that I ever watch is "Dr. OZ".
