Is ESPN Radio asleep at the wheel?

For whatever reason I actually listened to ESPN Radio today during the Mel Kiper Jr. and Jason Smith show. If this is not the worst sports radio has to offer I am shocked. They actually spent more than an hour breaking down schedules of the teams in the Big 10 for the upcoming football season. "I think they win that one and lose that one!" Somebody in Bristol wake up! Mel Kiper is a one trick pony. Jason Smith is just flat out awful!
Go find your major market ESPN Radio affiliate talent and put them to work!
These guys are dreadful to listen to!

I've heard them do that before. Kiper has his information, but he needs a good cohost to pull it out of him and keep it interesting. That whole "they win...they lose that one" thing is absolute radio death.

Why is Kiper even on the air full time? To justify a large contract despite the fact that his job only revolves around a few weeks out of the year (around the NFL Draft and during the bulk of the College Football season)

Also he admits that he has no usage for anything that happened before whats going on right now. Great example, Andy Pollen asked him to name the last Yankee perfect game before the David Wells one in 1998, and he didn't even hazzard a guess

Because Major League Baseball has taken a back seat to College and Pro football. Aside from the six major cities that FOX broadcasts games from, the rest of the country could care less.

Heck, even the Yankees really don't care. I was channel surfing saturday, when Derek Jeter came to the plate, bases loaded. Some obscure stat was posted about him not hitting a grand slam in 135 at bats with bases loaded. So he corks one to the deepest part of left center, pretty much sealing the Cubs doom...(well, life actually takes care of that, but I digress) So Jeter trots around the bases, gets a polite greeting from the three other base runners, and a few handshakes in the dugout..and thats that.

Now, look, I appreciate the fact that these guys don't break into spasmodic seizures after a big play, like NFL players do, but I've seen more emotion on the PGA tour than I have in baseball dugouts the past few seasons.

It seems to be another day at the office for these multi millionaires, and they appear to be going through the motions. Yes, the fans in attendance were pretty jacked, but again...the rest of the country really could care less about MLB.

Tee it up. Lets play football.

If you think Jason Smith is awful you should check out the piece of horsecrap doing the overnight shift. I think his name is Dan Patrick...he is ten times worse than Jason Smith.

Todd Wright does Overnights

Dan Patrick is on live 1-4PM EST. ....although your market may replay him overnight. What station do you listen on?

Umm, last time I checked though Bill Curry and Dick Vitale haven't been hosting year round weekend talk shows though and thats the point. Kiper knows one thing, but they have him hosting a show where he has to talk about sports in general

How many Heismans has he predicted the current Notre Dame QB will win?
______________

It puzzles me

Occasionally you hear them use their major market affiliate talent on their weekend programming. It is so clear when that happens that the shows take a distinct step up! I gaurantee you that Kiper and whoever this Jason Smith is that they will be breaking down schedules of another conference this upcoming weekend! How hard would it be to just leverage major market sports radio talent instead of that nonsense?

Consider that the college football season is on the horizon, wouldn't it make since for Kiper and Smith to break down the conferences?
______________

Talk to me about it in August!

In all fairness, we're getting into the dog days of sports talk. With baseball waning in poularity for some markets, the NBA just about to wrap, and still 6 weeks from NFL training camp, you gotta fill a six hourtalk show with something, and college football is enough to get people fired up.

Beano is priceless. That guy is just consitently wrong and he's a blowhard to boot.

Re: Mel Kiper Jr.

I like the Beano segments, Kiper needs to go back with Revsine.
