Is Estelle right for Hot AC?

I guess I am a categorizer of things but I have to say, in my opinion, that "American Boy" sounds like something I'd hear in American Eagle or the Gap. Cool song but I see it as only a regional favorite. Would like to know how this one is doing on phones with some folks who keep up with that at their individual stations.

We run the Hot AC version of AT40 and song is on the chart.

Is it right? No. It sounds out of place. It was the same with the non rap version of Umbrella-brella-brella...

My HotAC leans CHR quite a bit, because it is a high school station. We have Estelle in B rotation right now...30 or so spins a week. It doesn't sound that bad...just don't have it going into 3 Doors Down, Nickelback or something slower...typically it runs in and out of breaks or more CHR leaning currents (such as the new Christina Aguilera or Natasha Bedingfield).

I added it the week that my wife (suburban white female, 26, avid HAC fan) told me we needed to start playing it. Since then, it has been very well recieved from the feedback I get in the hallways and on the streets.

Nothing like having a woman in your life that's in the demo!

No joke -- I was in my local American Eagle today, and "American Boy" started playing.

It almost reminds me of Nelly Furtado's "Say It Right". I remember going round and round about this song, and when we finally added it, our listeners loved it.

Not a bad comparison... though I don't think it's quite as instant or memorable as SIR. Still, it does sound pretty good on a HAC which leans CHR. The key indeed is surrounding it right.

The non Kanye version sucks.
Your audience has been exposed to the song on VH-1 and it's been all over TV elsewhere, and they aren't using the non Kanye track.

Have more respect for the audience. This is 2008, Kanye West is mild compared to what America considers Hip Hop.

Most Hot AC's share audience with CHR's, and typically CHR is first. If a listener hears it on the CHR and likes it, then on the Hot AC station that is playing the edited track, Guess what? The CHR station just won her loyalty.

The dance remix doesnt use Kanye's vocals either,, mainly probably cause the beat is too fast and Kanye's raps would have to be pitched up,,, But my Hot AC edits on Kanye too, which I think is stupid, cause then they will play Akon????WTF>>>>.

My Hot AC (KBIG) actually does play the Kanye-less version. It really doesn't sound that bad there. That said, the Kanye version (sans expletives) is preferable to me.
