Is FNX "fixing" Their Psychic DJ Contest?

Just listened to another contestant try for the contest, where a caller tries to predict the next song to be played off the playlist. Someone called and said some song...wasn't really paying attention, but it was wrong. Then the guys threw out some "guesses", of course they were wrong too.

So then the intro to Nirvana's Come As You Are starts playing and Fletcher says "Some people on hold picked this song too, they're gonna be mad"

Did they purposely not pick the right caller so they don't have to give money away? They said today is the last day of the contest.

I was certainly perplexed when I saw the magazine ads. First of all, even the most narrow station in Boston, Kiss 108, must still have at least 150 songs in rotation (including gold titles). We're dealing with an alternative station that's probably at least twice as deep. I don't even need to mention that the contest is easy enough to rig. Who outside the station knows the music log?

If anything, do a contest where the listener must identify songs that have already played. Of course, that's too complicated. Don't get cute with contests, FNX. Listeners don't listen. Make it easy.

He actually said "You know how many people out there were trying to get through and has this as their song?" (referring to Nirvana)

I can post the audio if you like.

We only get one person to play the game the rest are told to try again later. No one else is on hold but the contestant who then goes live on the air.

BearFur also said - Did they purposely not pick the right caller so they don't have to give money away?

Someone won $600 a few days in.

A day before the contest FNXcard holders were sent a list of songs that could be played. They were able to track what songs had been played and mark them off the list in order to increase their odds.

Will said - I don't even need to mention that the contest is easy enough to rig.

True. But we would never do that. I want nothing more than for someone to get it right. Perhaps with some of that money they might buy me a beer at a show.

I love how everything is some grand conspiracy. God Bless the interwebs.

Either way you can try to enjoy it and maybe win some money or you can complain on a message board.

I am off to go hit the masslottery-info.com message boards and complain that I haven't won $54 million yet. I swear they must rig it!

Yeah, cuz no station ever rigs a contest, right? uh-huh

Anyhoo, I had the exact quote wrong, forgive me. But it doesn't change what I heard, the meaning of it anyway. The meaning I heard was that some people called in with the right answer, FNX didn't want to have to pay, so they ook a caller with the wrong answer. Sorry, that's how it came out on the air.

I'm not ragging on the guys, I like the Sandbox. I'm sure it wasn't their decision.

A major-market radio station puts LIVE callers on the air? Did I read this correctly?

Nobody's complaining that they haven't won. I don't think any of us would have tried to win being somewhat "insiders." I think what we all ARE saying is that the contest sucks. That's all. This board is for commentary. And we're commenting on what we think is a poor contest.

By the way YOU'RE here too. And posting. So step off your high horse.

BearFur - thanks for listening, we appreciate it. what fletcher was trying to say is that someone, somewhere probably had that as a guess. we only know what the one caller we take says. we have no idea what anyone else out there might have said because they are told, by a phone screener, that we already have a contestant and then are disconnected. fletcher was merely speculating.

Will - Yes, we have live callers. We have a delay system in place to keep people from swearing live on-air.

BB - I would argue that the contest doesn't suck. Listeners are always excited about it and response is mostly favorable. Perhaps the insiders are a little more jaded. I check these boards every once in a while to see what is happening. I responded to this post b/c it implied that FNX was cheating the listeners. Wouldn't you do the same? No high horse here. Listen to the show, the proof of that is apparent.

Now, excuse me while I go post on the was-that-sarcasm.com message boards.

Thanks for the honest response, however, listening to people who already really like you (ala the 1% of your audience who actually fanatically try to win contests) can kill you. Who knows what the other 99% are thinking. I personally think they're thinking "boring, another loser!"

I'd say it was a fun contest to listen to. I frequently chat on yes.com's chat room for FNX, and everyone there seemed to be really into the contest...as well as certain people I know who are Sandbox fans, and that gets you listeners. Isn't that what radio is all about?

Anyone who chats about their favorite radio station at yes.com is definitely part of the 1%.

This is off subject but I still don't understand how yes.com even works...because it's not digital...it picked up 95% of what i played on my college station and we used cd's....

just so this post isn't a total waste I'll add to the topic of any FNX thread on these boards...

"fnx sucks and so do their crappy contests"

reply:
"no you suck because you're a bitter radio dj"

thread goes off topic in 3...2...1....

"oh yeah? well fnx has a sucky signal and plays sucky music"

reply:
"fnx only needs to serve the hardcore audience, because they understand it,and you don't, so you suck"

I swear every FNX thread is the same...but about the contest...I actually thought the contest was a cool idea but just wasn't executed properly.

"True. But we would never do that. I want nothing more than for someone to get it right."

Lie. I'm positive there are things you want more. Like a raise or better ratings for example.

"I love how everything is some grand conspiracy. God Bless the interwebs."

He said "inter webs".

"Either way you can try to enjoy it and maybe win some money or you can complain on a message board."

Either way you can argue about it on the same message board. Ir's snobbery and hypocracy in one post. Message boards are bad unless Ed is replying to them???

This one is the winner:

"I check these boards every once in a while to see what is happening."

Every once in a while? Stop it.

Hey Pimp! Long time no see. Happy to see you haven't changed.

You can check the dates on my posts. I only post when someone decides to make an assumption about the station I work for. Most of the time the post is brought to my attention by someone else.

Message Boards are bad when people nitpick and complain about subjects to which they obviously have no insight. You won't see me questioning other stations' contests, promotions or decisions because I don't know what is happening in their building. Debating the benefits of a contest is one thing but accusing someone of cheating is another.

Perhaps you didn't understand but the implication based on the context of that sentence was that the "want" was in regards to the contest not my entire life. I don't appreciate being called a liar and am disappointed in the mods for not deleting such a personal attack.

I am a lot of things but a liar is not one of them. You can apologize when you are buying me that steak.

There is only one thing I want more than anything else in the world and that is for you to find happiness. I mean that. You complete me.

In a somewhat related note, when FNX did this contest in Oct/Nov of last year they had their highest TSL this decade.

This is probably the reason they brought it back.

then i stand corrected about my post earlier...it was well executed

Did I say "lie"? Sorry, I meant "absurd statement that is almost certainly untrtue.

Kind of like this one:

"There is only one thing I want more than anything else in the world and that is for you to find happiness. I mean that."

No,you don't mean that. Mostly because I am quite happy. Just because I disagree with the things you say does not mean I lack happiness. But also because there is no way my happiness is on your radar of things you desire.

As for your steak. Didn't the next book come out? Or was that just a trend? Either way, your numbers went down. No steak for you.
