Is FOX 31 Ready For It's Rebirth November 1st?

Insiders at Channel 8 inform me that the main studio and master control room for WUHF FOX 31 isn’t ready yet and won’t be by the debut, or should I say, return of the 10:00 news on Tuesday November, 1st. So it appears that 31 and 8 might have to share studios for a while until construction work is completed on Humboldt Street.

As Scott Fybush reported on his web page, 8 did hire a former Elmira TV reporter to anchor the majority of the FOX newscasts, while WROC’s Katrina Irwin will anchor two nights of the week.

I’ve also heard that meteorologist Rob Haswell and sports director John Kucko will also be featured on the FOX 10 pm newscast.

As a side note the same inside source said that meteorologist Christine Crafts will be leaving Channel 8 at the end of this month after working at the station for the past seven years. Recently Crafts has been featured on 8’s low-rated early morning show as a sidekick/meteorologist to anchor Cathy Orosz.

Crafts departure comes a few months after former “Wake Up Rochester” host Melissa Long left 8 under questionable circumstances and is now working for CNN in Atlanta doing internet reporting.

The set is done. It's in the Channel 8 studio, which if you've ever seen it, is quite large. The show will launch 11/1.

Cathy Orosz, Christine Crafts and Rob Haswell are leaving by the end of the year. Melissa Long has already left, to CNN.

It appears that the management at WROC needs a history lesson. That station has never fully recovered from the strike that took place in the 1970s.

One of 8’s biggest problems is that, until recently, it had a “revolving door” when it came to on-air talent and support staff. Now it appears that revolving door is back in operation once again.

If you are correct, and Haswell, Crafts and Orosz are leaving, that means 8’s entire early morning show cast is departing. Not that “Wake Up Rochester” was any ratings success against 10 and 13. Besides those three, I’ve heard that a few other employees are wondering how long their careers at 8 will last.

As for the studio, you apparently have more updated information than I because as of last week I was told that the studio was still under construction along with master control.

WUHF master control is going to be run out of the WROC facility? I didn't realize master control operations were also moving to WROC. I just assumed WROC was only doing the news for Fox...with master control staying at the current WUHF building.

I don't remember if this was addressed or not, but how is the NABET union local representing WROC staff reacting to the news merger?

Is Nexstar going to purchase WUHF, then "sell it off" to Mission? Or will WUHF remain a Sinclair station?

When the announcement was made back in September that a "partnership" was created in which Channel 8 would operate FOX 31 news, it was also announced that the FOX operation would move from its location on East Avenue to Channel 8's headquarters on Humboldt Street because there was more room. WROC has a huge facility that once housed not only TV but two radio stations, until the radio stations were sold off many years ago.

As for the union issue, a deal was made in which certain individuals coming over from 31 to 8 would have to become members of the union.

Nexstar and Sinclair are still two separate organizations. It's just that both companies came to an agreement in which Channel 8 (Nexstar) would operate Channel 31's (Sinclair) news. It's been done in other markets, so this isn't anything new.

...it and the traffic department need to talk more often.

Or at least, there's got to be some explanation for the promo that just aired, during the Simpsons, less than half an hour after the end of the 2005 World Series, recapping the Fox coverage of the 2004 baseball season and promoting the Fox coverage of the, er, upcoming 2005 season.

(Not that I mind seeing the Red Sox win from 2004 again or anything, but still...)<P ID="signature">______________

Maybe the next thing FOX 31 will air is a promo for Super Bowl 39… the New England Patriots versus the Philadelphia Eagles. (My money is on the Patriots winning by a score of 24 to 21)

Or better yet a news update. Bush defeats Kerry!

Small market TV at it's best. This business is going to hell in a hand basket. And these so-called "managers" will do NOTHING about these screw-ups. They will just laugh about it and sweep it under the rug. Screw-ups like these are unacceptable. Period.
