Is Hot 106 doomed now.......?

If Hot 106 gets hurt badly enough by the flip of Boston's 96.9, what's to stop Cumulus (in a cost cutting move)...from blowing up the live and local format, and slipping in Nash-Country....and taking a run at Cat Country 98.1?

Under the right circumstances, I think it might make sense.

Hot 106 was doomed the day Stern left for satellite.

Agreed. He would have been a better fit for HJY's audience. HJY actually did carry Stern's weekly National radio show from September 86 to February 1987 until DIL Lorimar canceled the show. Hot 106 was a weird station for Stern from the very beginning. Hip Hop/Urnban listeners are generally not Stern fans, but I guess Howard converted a lost of the audience and brought over a lot of new listeners too. I didn't really listen to Hot 106 much until Stern was on. Then I stopped listening when he was no longer on the station. I wonder how their morning ratings are now compared to when Stern was there.

Pretty much the same here. In fact, the ONLY thing I ever really listened to on HOT 106 WAS the Stern Show.

But....then again....I didn't really fit the age demo they were going for. ;)

When I posed the question originally I was thinking from thier piont of view.Cumulus is looking to save money and the trail every year seems to cut from every station there exept WPRO.They have even cut from Lite and PRO-fm.Where else can they possibly cut from.790 am has become a dumping ground for stuff the main office wants the Trail to air so it gets put on 790.Its a fact that if you have hipsters around you they switch between Hot 106 and Boston stations.
I know people of the good ole days of WOON.Thats not going to happen.
So, what is the possibility of WWKX of going into another direction.
One strong possibity if Cumulus is trying to buy CBS I can see a rebranding of HOT 106 to AMP Radio 106. Thier own product.
2nd, A possibility but not so strong.. a flip to NASH FM.Country is the #1 music format. So I dont know if they would even try to make a dent into WCTK..
3rd but not going to happen is Scott Shannons True Oldies Channel. That I would like to see but not going to happen because Classic hits stations are being blown up for more younger formats.

I would really like to see something done with WWLI.Sorry but the branding does not even come close to what they play now.Thier is an imaging crisis there.I dont know about you but when I hear Llite Rock Favorites I think of Celine Dion and the likes not dance club music I hear on Both Hots,AMP and Pro.

Hot 106's coverage area is somewhat attractive for a potential Country format. The signal is strongest in northern Providence County, where Country music has more than a few fans. However, like Boston, Providence is a market that cannot support two Country stations. Remember the WBCS-WKLB war of the '90s? It proved that Boston could not support two Country stations. Providence, with similar demographics - combined with Hot's inferior signal - is not suited for two Country outlets.

It's been debated over and over again... There's no possible way that Cumulus could by CBS Radio. Besides, there would be signal overlaps that would put a Cumulus/CBS combo over the cap. Providence FM's would have to be sold off. Not to worry though, there's absolutely ZERO chance that the lame Cumulus to buy CBS rumor would ever come true.

Besides, your own theory has Cumulus running 2 CHR's in one cluster.

Lite has been redefined for the current generation of radio consumers across the country, and it has apparently left you behind. Celine Dion hasn't had regular airplay in the better part of a decade. Today, your average 30-something female knows that lite is going to be a calmer presentation than the local CHR. Lite will play songs she knows, some old school tracks, some new stuff, but is tame and safe enough to play in the office and not offend anyone under the age of 70.

The branding doesn't need to be changed, the definition of the brand was changed.
