Is Hot 97 NYC still hip hop?

bucwhyl

Banned
Or have they jumped on the rhythmic pop bandwagon like other rhythmic stations, including sister Power 106 has done?

Looking at Hot 97's playlist, they seem to be on the urban side, so I would say yes. Hot 97's playlist looks more urban than Power 106's playlist.

Power 106 has always been rhythmic. There was just a time when they had enough rhythmic hip hop hits to maintain somewhat of a strong urban image without having to play recurrents. These days, they still play (former) hip hop artists and producers who have moved on to the new generation sound. That's why it seems as if they (Power 106) themselves have changed, when in reality, it was the people who made the music they are playing who changed their sound. They've always had a tight playlist.

Hot 97 was urban for a while, but has switched back to rhythmic and does play a few rhythmic hits from time to time.

If you compare what stations like KPWR and KYLD are playing now compared to what they were playing 6 or 12 months ago, there's been a definite shift back towards more hip-hop. The trend cycles continue ...

I thought Wild and Power were shifting away from the true hip hop and were leaning more towards the Black Eyed Peas stuff: The "Pop Hop".

I thought Wild and Power were shifting away from the true hip hop and were leaning more towards the Black Eyed Peas stuff: The "Pop Hop".

Not quite sure what qualifies as Pop-Hop or at least why the distinction is relevant here. Were Run DMC and The Fat Boys pop-hop? LL Cool J and MC Hammer? Snoop Dogg and Puff Daddy? Master P and Lil Wayne? Is pop-hop a measure of sound, record sales or airplay?

Regardless, you can check out yes.com to see what Power and Wild are now playing. Here's Power (no more Lady Gaga, no Katy Perry, BEP doesn't show up 'til #38, a wide variety of current and recurrent hip-hop sounds, and their most recent ratings were up ... no sense in trying to out-do KIIS, especially with no full-signal urban in the market):

This playlist doesn't surprise me, since that list could change anytime. And besides, KPWR's playlist still feature Electropop-heavy tracks like "Cooler Than Me" and "Memories", so in essence they're still doing "Pop Hop."

I'm sure there's more on that list that qualifies as "Pop Hop", but I'm just giving you examples.

I'm sure there's more on that list that qualifies as "Pop Hop"

In that case Power 106 has always been playing “pop hop”. How is that playlist much different from 3, 5, 10, or 15 years ago? That’s why I asked if Puff Daddy, LL Cool J, MC Hammer, Snoop Dogg, Run DMC, Will Smith, Master P, and Lil Wayne were “pop hop”. How about Quad City DJs and Pharrell? Or the Bucketheads?

Your designations seem a bit random. You have R&B singers, pop singers, “pop” rappers, “hardcore” rappers, a reggae/dancehall-flavored rapper, and a DJ collab with a rapper. Some are new artists while others have been getting airplay on this station for years. The only common thread I can see is uptempo tracks mainly with a 4/4 beat. That’s just a retro-80s hip-hop/R&B sound. Still hip-hop.

This playlist doesn't surprise me, since that list could change anytime. And besides, KPWR's playlist still feature Electropop-heavy tracks like "Cooler Than Me" and "Memories", so in essence they're still doing "Pop Hop."

Sure, so again they’ve always been doing “pop-hop” then. I don’t think them playing those songs and/or currents by Ludacris, T.I., Lloyd Banks, Ice Cube, Drake, Nikki Minaj and Jay-Z would make me NOT call them “still hip-hop”, which was what the OP was asking.

And yes playlists for CHRs obviously change. Just a few months ago Lady Gaga was all over their playlist, now she’s not. Playlists for rhythmics in 1990-91 looked much different from those of 1993-94.

They're both rhythmic (Hot 97 and Power 106). One is just more rhythmic intensive than the other. Try to find any urbans in Atlanta playing certain rhythmic songs from that list. If anybody knows their urban music, it's Atlanta, especially the hard core urban fans. Trust me. I've tried to "slip in" things that SHOULD fit in and...well, I'll just say I got caught almost every time.

By the way, I've been streaming them recently, and while I may favor the rhythmic sound, urban lovers would not accept it. I heard a lot of stuff that would make most people think "and why isn't this considered urban?" Well, that's just the way it is. It does seem, according to the lists provided here, like Power is trying to go more towards an urban feel, but those people who I saw "protesting" and chanting about they should represent more hip hop especially with their slogan will not be satisfied with "I wanna be a millionaire, so freakin bad" and stuff like that. They'll probably never be satisfied until they get their 100.3 The Beat type sound back, which I don't see happening anytime soon in L.A.

If anyone here in Phoenix is hoping for a true urban, then you might as well forget about it too, or move to Atl.

By the way, Urbans are including "OMG" by Usher. I was shocked to discover that a few weeks ago.

I miss the good ol' days when Lina Santiago did her promo drops for Power 106. I regret being stuck on the east coast during those times of my life because even though I caught up with that entire sound now, I missed experiencing it to the fullest back when it was hot. The only way I learned about Lina Santiago, Angelina, Lil Suzy, Rockell, Jocelyn Enriquez and all of them was during my winter and summer break when I came back to Phoenix or visited Cali. If I could go back in time, I would live out those years of my life near WiLD 94.9, where EVERYTHING I wanted to hear lived! Those were the days, and I can't wait for that style in sound and creativity to resurface. That, along with the old school futuristic complicated style Timbaland beats trend that were hot. Why that entire style and sound died after the millennium? I have no idea. We've evolved back to the same ol' boring easy to make beats, or like my musician friend says "beats a 3 year old could make".

Power 106, Groove Radio 101.1, B100.3, 99.1 KGGI, 102.7 KIIS FM (where I discovered Rockell), those were the good ol' days. At least Power 106 has tried their best to stay true to the sound they started out with, but in a modernized fashion. They always hired DJ's who were familiar with that sound and maintained an "aquanet friendly" format to some degree.

I'm not sure if Hot 97 gave attention to any of that sound, but I do know (or remember) some folks from New York who was aware of some of that sound.

I miss the Bay Area sound. Those of you on the west coast or at KYLD (or probably now KMVQ) know EXACTLY what I'm talking about! West Coast Bay Area Freestyle.

Boy, KYLD and Power 106 has been through A LOT. This is where my love for rhythmic radio and Party Station style formats came from. This is also where my love for Jonny Z, Dj Laz, El Presidente, Artie The 1 Man party came about, too. DJ LAZ is now PD at WPOW, which explains why they have one of the best unique rhythmic formats out there. HE knows that rhythmic party sound... Go to yes dot com and see what's in WPOW's playlist!

They'll probably never be satisfied until they get their 100.3 The Beat type sound back

For several years Power played more hip-hop than the Beat. The Beat always played much more R&B. They want the old Power sound back.

"Power 106, Where Pop Hop Lives."

Does that mean that Hip-Hop no longer lives there?

I guess with #s 9, 13, 26, 29, 31, 32, 60, 73, 79, 87, 97, 99 and 100 we could say…

"Power 106, Where R&B Lives."

For one, this is 2010 and listeners have moved on to other things, like the iPod and internet radio for their real Hip-Hop/R&B fix, same with Dance. As much as I like to see KPWR actually go R&B, that won't happen in their lifetime, even at the expense of its Hispanic listeners. And I don't see anybody going for a "Beat"-inspired station. That name was toxic the moment Radio One and later Magic got their hands on it.

As for a new slogan, they might as well call it "Power 106, where HITS & Hip-Hop Lives" because thats what their playlist looks like these days.

Clear Channel should flip Hot 92.3 to an actual hip-hop station, I've heard other CC hip-hop stations and they actually sound great.

Notice... once again... the complaints about them not being "real" enough. Another post has been added since I copied and pasted with someone from Oregon complaining about how Oregon sucks and they wish they were in L.A, so I guess Power 106 is hardcore compared to whatever is in Oregon.

It's funny how you can get crappy hip-hop stations from Oregon, but then drive up to Washington and your listening to a good one - KUBE 93 Seattle.

Does Portland have any hip-hop stations? I don't know much about Oregon radio, but I know Portland lost their hip-hop station when Jammin' 107.5 flipped to WiLD 107.5.
