I think it's dead, or that no one cares for this market anymore.

everything is just so bland, I am a classic rock listener, every other city in this state has a classic rock station FAR better than ours, and almost everything major in the market is a clear channel or cumulus, only exceptions to that would be WAHR, WRTT, and WRSA, maybe it's because I live here and have heard it every day of my life. My current favorite station isn't even in Alabama, but 90 miles to the north @ 105.9 FM, Nashville's Classic Rock Station 105-9 The Rock. If Clear Channel programmed and ran WTAK like CC of nashville runs 105.9, my opinion would possibly change, but being that it's a crappy little 5kw rimshot, and 105.9 is a mammoth 100kw, that is unlikely to ever happen.
______________

VOMan, pay no attention to BamaWolf...the only thing this guy ever does is complain about WTAK and talk about how WNRQ up here in Nashville is SOOOOOOO much better...yet they're both owned by Clear Channel and have VERY similar playlists and both carry JB&B in the morning.

Huntsville is not a dead market, it's just asleep. Another signal (WLAY) coming into the market will probably give the market a little kick. Clear Channel says they're moving Kool 92/94's format to 100.3 when the WXQ twins go to Cumulus. Who knows what Cumulus will do with them, though.

What Huntsville lacks is excitement based on the sheer fact that stations don't change formats every six months. The only station in the market with any kind of volatility is that 93.3 signal that went from country, to AC, then back to country, then urban, then to urban AC. Everything else is just as it was 10 years ago.
______________

The fact that much hasn't changed in the past 10 years lets one know how dead/boring it must be!

Living in Cullman, I can get all of Huntsville and Bham stations, Huntsville wins. The Rocket is the best rocker, 90.9 is good for some blues and jazz, 107.3 (I know it's in Florence) is a good AC station, especially on Sat. nights when they play some "Real Rock". 1550 is good if you want some jammin oldies. Last but not least is 620 if ypu're in the mood for some south of the border music. For now anyway there is oldies 92/94 also.

You're confusing dead and boring with "stable". That is one thing that Huntsville can boast. I, for one, would LOVE to work in a market like Huntsville where I wouldn't have to fear a format change (and hence, my job) every time the ratings dipped a half a point.
______________

when was that?
I only remember Country 93 WHVK, 93.3 the possum, Mix 93.3, US 93, Power 93.3, and the current WHRP
______________

What he said.

Both Huntsville and Birmingham are pretty resistant to change, but the Huntsville stations just sound better. They have more focus, better audio quality, and better airstaffs than their B'ham counterparts. Not to mention that Huntsville still has plenty of stations owned by local groups who understand the city, something that B'ham hasn't had on FM since A. G. Gaston sold out.

This is just a case of "the grass is greener on the other side" syndrome.

I lived in Huntsville 1980-1984. At that time, 93.3 was known as "Boogie 93" WBGY and was in Tullahoma, Tennessee. They put a fair signal into Huntsville, was ok on a car radio but not much in the house. Not bad for a station from a small town, they definitely boogied at night! Audio processing was very good for that era.

Boogie 93 was a short-lived breath of fresh air in the 80's, but thanks to our terrain couldn't deliver a signal to the South half of town. Even moving up on that 1200' stick near Elora TN, 93.3 still only gets a marginal signal into South Hsv. That's why it's moving all the way into town and dropping to squat for power. Huntsville's terrain definitely sucks for good FM reception. And Huntsville radio is still unexciting. From only a few choices 20 years ago, to many choices now...the big dogs are all bland. But, they are programmed and processed for the masses. Thank goodness for good antennas, and a few out-of-the-ordinary stations like WXFL & WQLT in Florence, and WLLX in Lawrenceburg, TN. Overprocessing is still rampant in Huntsville. Overprocessed music begins to sound like pink noise and makes your ears tired. It would be sooooo easy to lighten up on the processing, and still deliver suitably "loud" programming. ZYP set the overprocessing standard in the 80's, and everyone else is still keeping up with the Jonses.

I couldn't get Boogie 93 at home with a mountain to my north, but got a great signal from the old WQEN, Q104 (then) in Gadsden. That station had it together in the early 80's with programming, AND processing.
