Is It A Stick or Schtick?

Was Tony Femino being cute? Trying to circumvent some policy of TMISU? Or steering clear of a state or federal law that prohibits giving away cigars? One of his sponsors on KT'R's Voice To America is promoting a big "blow out" of new cigars and listeners are invited to come in during certain hours for a free "stick". Now Nurse Jeff and I qucikly figured out that it was cigars they were giving away, not sticks (afterall we are the Esteemed Middle Eastern Men of the Media). But why the confusing semantics? The FCC allows cigar advertising, so anyone into smelly clothes and throat cancer is more than welcome to enjoy a free "stick". Sorry, the Nurse and I will not be in attendance!

I really support the idea of Tony's show, but I wince whenever I hear him do it.

Its such a shallow show, and he really comes off as a jock trying to a different type of show.

Some things just make me smack my head. Last week he was talking about Africa, and he couldn't even pronounce the name of the country right (kept saying "Tan-Zane-i-a"). I've heard him do other completely stupid things, like calling Ukraine "Ukrania". This is easy stuff, stuff you learn in grade school.

He wants to be taken seriously on foreign affairs, but then he does it like a sports show, talking smack. Yesterday, he was talking about a survey done by a think tank about who the Europeans would vote for and trumping that his show already did it by talking to a half a dozen people. And saying that he did it first, etc. Not true, I remember hearing about this several weeks ago.

Its a great concept, but a lousy show. Sometimes, he even mixes foreign affairs with long screeds about sports. Someone listening in Europe or Pakistan really doesn't care what Tony thinks about baseball.

I've heard the show a few times. I'm annoyed at the stereotype of the uncultured, uneducated, boorish American, and it's sad when it would seem that someone is giving credence to the caricature, but in Tony's defense (or -fence, if you like), he's not doing an NPR show. I like his show o.k. He's a pretty solid personality, and I'll tune to NPR (left-leaning politics, and all) when I want something a little more high-brow. I didn't hear the mispronounciations, however, but if they were authentic (and not for humor's sake)...well, that's like nails on a chalkboard, and unforgivable.

I noticed "Dead Air" Dave on the drops. What became of him?
