Is It Country Or Not???

Is It Country Or Not???
Todays country stations need to be a little more particular of the music they are playing
Some stations are mixing southern & classic rock in their rotations,
Next will be hearing "Hip Hop"
I heard a song "Hip Hop In A Honky Tonk" the other day, now what's that all about.
Country radio wake up, Record labels as well need stop killing country music...
There are so many new good country artist trying to catch a break, but can't, due to radio excepting rock as part of their format. I even saw a recent promo putting The Dobbie Brothers on their complimation, "Come On"
Sorry to say but COUNTRY RADIO! No More, Kid Rock, Uncle Cracker, John Mellencamp etc. Enough Already PLEASE STOP KILLING COUNTRY MUSIC

You sound like the people who bitched about Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash in the early 60s and Garth Brooks and Alan Jackson in the early 90s. "Country" has moved from a rural appeal format to a suburban appeal format. In the Northeast, most Country radio fans started out as Pop or Rock fans and then learned to like Country as their live experiences expanded in adulthood. We've already had Hip Hop-influenced Country hits: Big & Rich "Save A Horse, Ride A Cowboy" and Toby Keith "I Wanna Talk About Me". Southern Rock was essentially Country music created by the Boomer generation who mashed Country & Rock together. Guys like Tim McGraw grew up with that sound and find it to be a natural fit. Kid Rock, Uncle Kracker and John Mellencamp are stretching the envelope and enhancing Country, not killing it.

If you want that then go start up your own radio station or XM station that just plays traditional country. Radio stations will so what they think a good portion of the radio public wants so they can sell advertising and make money. That is the primary job of a radio station, like it or not.

Today's country music traces a lot of it's roots to the country rock or heartland rock of the 70's and 80's in the form of the Eagles, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Allman Brothers, and other southern rock bands.

The late country entertainer Boxcar Willie once said " Theres nothing wrong with country music today, It is just those claiming to be country when they are not. If the Tennessee waltz came out today, it wouldn't be a hit". He was right, most of this so-called country music today is awful.

Good posts--good topic!! This teeny bopper stuff is ok on their own stations, but how is Taylor Swift country?? Some of her early stuff had a little country twang, but her newer stuff doesn't. Far as I concerned, there are very few new artists that are country; Miranda Lambert seems like one of the only newer singers that has a country style...darius Rucker?? Send him and his Jive back to Hootie and the Blowfish. I realize that the new country stations have a lot of young female listeners, but...need real country!!! ;D

Absolutely Taylor country, I don't think so. Darius Rucker, don't even get me started. Beware of nashville trying to promote artist like Colt Ford & Mikel Knight. "Come On"
There are so many REAL COUNTRY artist in Canada & Texas that need to be heardas well
I have to give credit to Dierks Bentley & Ken Mellons for taking country back to it's roots
George Strait & Alan Jackson said it best...MURDER ON MUSIC ROW

Has it ever occured to you that there may not be enough of a market for "traditional country" music to thrive? Modern day country is what has been hot for the past two decade. Radio stations and the music industry are in it for the money. Everyone is in it for the money.

To follow up on UpstateNYBill's last observation about stations being in it for the money all that really means is that they're goal is to be relevant & entertaining to the most listeners. If they accomplish those goals, it usually translates to solid revenues. But stations are really in it to satisfy their target audience. Regarding the ongoing discussion about what constitutes "good" Country music from "faux" Country music, I think we get stuck on styles, sounds and interpretations which are representative of certain eras. To me, Country music isn't about sound as much as it is about concerns, experiences, a certain perspective on life & values. Taylor Swift considers herself to be a Country artist as do Keith Urban and Darius Rucker. Therefore, they are whether or not a listener wants to accept those particular artists interpretations of how a Country song should sound. But, whereas a lot of the traditional Country music from the early and mid 20th century focused on the experiences of people who were either in or emerging from poverty in rural America, more and more Country artists are coming from the ranks of the suburban middle class and their perspective on life is reflected in their 21st Century version of Country music.

UpstateNYBill... So what you are saying is that it's ok to put HIP HOP in a country format, because it's about the money, I don't think so, That's more than stretching the envelope... Well as Waylon would say, "WRONG".I really do believe that there are few more folks out there that would agree along with me

The keyword here is "few". Not enough folks to make a difference to what kind of country music is played on radio stations. Many country stations are targeting the crossover audience who also listen rock and adult contemporary music. That makes up quite a bit of the market. If you want classic country, I'm sure there is interenet radio sites and XM radio stations that have classic country.

Did you that your username would make people think that you are a heavy metal fan rather than a classic country country fan?

UpstateNYBill It seems you want to argue my issue and that you're not listening to what i'm saying... It sounds like you're in it for the MONEY, all well and good. This is just my opinion and i stick to my opinion. Stop killing country music. Once again, there are so many REAL COUNTRY artist that won't get played due to the fact "It's all about the MONEY" Now you want to argue about my username. Please take a chill pill you'll live a little longer... You'll probably argue this statement as well, "MERRY CHRISTMAS"

Merry Christmas,

The radio business is um, a business. A highly competitive business today with competition from satellite radio and internet radio. They have staff to pay, bills to pay, and advertisers to satisfy. They play what their niche and ratings indicate their audience wants. You may not like it, but everyone is in it for the money, even you.

Perhaps you should take this topic to the country music forum where you will get opinions from people who are more passionate about country music than this little regional forum.
