Is it Haboobing Where U R?

Talk about taking lame to a new level....

Saturday night Nurse Jeff and I wuz listening to storm coverage on KT'R when we heard a 92~Three reporterette file a report from Mesa. Uhhh, scratch that location - the report filed was from inside her comfy home in Mesa. Rain water was puddling in the yard and (oh my!) falling leaves meant the next day she'd have to clean them from her yard and swimming pool. ??? WTF ??? This shirley has to be a new low in broadcast journalism, so the Nurse and I'll make certain we'll include it in the Fall curriculum at the Buckeye Media Hut!

At least Detour Storm Watch Dan wasn't dropping turkeys out of Yellow Thunder in the reporterette's back yard. Then again, that might have been a tad bit more newsworthy...and noteworthy, too.

Here's a wonderful radio reporting example you should consider for your Fall curriculum: http://vimeo.com/7824102

It's just too bad that Jimmy Q wasn't able to chime in with some faaaaantastic weather tidbit. I guess KT'R didn't negotiate live weekend storm coverage in the McWeather package from Mc12 Snooze.

I'm putting my foot down and refusing to use 'haboob' to describe what we Arizonans have always just called a dust storm.

No more ha....ha.....ha.....CHOO....boob!!!!!

lt, c'mon! These are NOT our run -of -the -desert dust storms. A couple of them looked like the scene from The Mummy. I'm beginning to wonder if Jeff and Doc haven't accidentally let loose an ancient curse during one of their secret handshake rituals at the Media Hut!

pattiwacki...it all depends where you live. I live downtown on Central, where it really hasn't been that extreme, for whatever reason. So when I see a national headline saying, "Arizona Recovering From Massive Dust Storms" I gotta laugh! Yes, it's just like Katrina around here, CNN! We've all been evacuated due to these haboobs and we're all living in FEMA trailers now.
Here's an idea...maybe the media just likes to use the word Ha-BOOB!!!

Ms. Wacki.....I've also been privvy to broadcasters describing what natives have always called "dust devils" as mini tornadoes (cue the breathless excited broadcaster who stops just short of uttering Biblical end-of-the-world phrases).

When we were kids one of the most exciting things we did was to find a dust devil traveling across the school playground and run to get inside it. It would have even been more fun had the dust in my eyes not prevented me from admiring my female classmates as their dresses were sucked up above their heads. But I digress.....

Dust storms in the desert are just that. Dust storms. Not sand storms ala The Great Sahara Desert. Not haboobs. Just dust. And when flowers begin to grow from the dust accumulation on my front porch I'll call it a BIG dust storm.

I don't think it was us....but whenever Nurse Jeff tugs on the hookah, he conjures up images of former 3TV'er Liz Habib doing weather http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8VLWw0zem3o&feature=related Maybe Habib has something to do with Haboobs ??? Sure glad the local Buckeye station doesn't go Habooblistic whenever it rains or the wind blows leaves into the Media Hut cement pond!

Apparently, we have bigger haboobs in Ahwatukee than you folks downtown have. ;D

Are there any haboobs bigger than Mac 'n Gaydos? :D Wonder if that reporterette was able to get all the leaves out of her pool by now? Not since Aunt Carlos' show was booted off the ASU kiddie bus a while back have Nurse Jeff and I had such a laugh out of 92~Three!

;D

Remember when someone painted a swastika on The Bunker's front door? Edith asked "I wonder why they call it a swastika?" Archie answered " Well LOOK at it Edith, what the He!! else are ya gonna call it?!?!" What I saw in Ahwatukee, was no doubt about it a HABOOB. Then I saw another one a few weeks later. Since then we've had a couple of dust storms, but those first two were HABOOBS for sure. Doc's invoking the name of Liz H. gave me an idea though, if the term haboob originally referred to Saharan occurrences, maybe we should call them HABIBS in Phoenix.

As Ms. H might say, "You know what the **** they are!" ;D
