That is something one has to consider when a Clear Channel has two powerhouse stations in Kiss & JamN.
Why create your own competition if you don't have the sales staff to compete with the other stations.
PLUS - like Exxon, Shell Oil, BP etc. they are all conspiring to keep the prices somewhat acceptable for
all concerned. The "players" love having few independent stations - WATD, WXRV, WJIB - they can deal
with that instead of 1430, 1400, 93.7, etc. etc. all having different owners and different sales staffs.
The community has X amount of dollars that radio knows it can partake of without stepping too much on
what is put aside for TV and print media. So they are content to own stations that don't get any ratings
(AM 1430) in exchange for dominating the market with other stations - KISS & JamN.
When a WBOS generates revenues without ratings, voila, all the better. That's why they dumped a perfectly
good station for a talk station it took years to get off the ground. It was competing with MAGIC (what was it, WSSH or something? prior to 96.9 going talk?)
of course it is intentional. One of the biggest problems I have with Ed Markey and Bill Clinton,
the Telecommunications Act of 1996 - what a joke.
