IS IT ME OR DOES KFRC STILL SUCK?

I just can't listen for more than 2 or 3 songs. Boring, boring, boring! What the hell is wrong with CBS?

They've got a winner in NY and a winner in LA, but they just refuse to give the Bay Area a decent Classic Hits/Oldies station??

I was up in Sacramento over the weekend and decided to compare signal strengths between 106.9 KFRC S.F. and 106.9 KRNO Reno.

When I cross the Sacramento River on Highway 50 it begins to go back and forth between each station.

Anyway I heard a few good songs on KFRC and it sounded OK. However I never heard any personality and suspect that we never will on the weekends.

My evaluation is that it is so pre-planned which may be the reason that airpab is bored with them.

I will try and tune in the weekday personalites to see what's happening there again.

Mostly I listen to 102.9 KBLX and 98.1 KISS because I am confident that I can tune in to these stations anyday and anytime and hear a live person and that is the reason I listen to radio.

Sometimes I tune in 99.7 and forget it's not KFRC anymore. Their sound and format sounds more established and targeted that KFRC.

I look forward to your thoughts on these stations.

I think we're beating a dead horse here...CBS is obviously not interested in turning KFRC into K-Earth or WCBS-FM. It's too bad, but that's the way it is. The morning show is obviously live, and I think Sue Hall and Jay Coffey are, too - but it hardly matters when they only get to open the mic every three or four songs, and aren't allowed to talk into the stop-set.

The music is better lately I think -good selection of songs, and decent variety. That's something, at least...

Impossible to enjoy! The only exception is the one hour Beatles Brunch with JMF! The playlist is ready for a major overhaul!!!!!!!!!!!!! This boring station would never work in LA!!!!!!!!!! Or NY!!!!! The current PD,, should be replaced,,, Radio was great when James Gabbert had KIQI and KOFY, the nifty 1050! And Sean King Made the news a pleasure to listen to!!!!!!!

Or it could well be that the people who are complaining about the current KFRC are not the demographic (aka "too old") KFRC wants to reach. After all, how many mattresses, arthritis cures, and hospitals can a station sell to an audience anyway, especially when KGO's got that angle covered?

If you're up along I-80 in the Tahoe/Reno area and hankering for Oldies try 103.7 "The River". Absolutely the best terrestrial station for the Oldies format I've heard in years. Unfortunately they don't webcast and their sig doesn't reach Phoenix. :(

Could be...the more recent "Classic Hits" stations like the new KFRC (never say Oldies) with a more late 70s - and 80s playlist are meant to attract listeners in their 30s and 40s.

I can't help but notice that most of the more traditional Oldies stations people are recommending are in small media markets (Reno/Tahoe)...or the other extreme - LA and New York, which are the two largest markets.

I visit friends in Redding often, which still has a traditional 60s Oldies station, but there are tons of retirees up there, so they may have a built in audience. It sounds like a low rent version of 99.7/KFRC circa 2002.

The Steve Michaels-programmed KCEZ, aka Oldies 102.1,
was Number-One in the Fall 2007 book, 12+ in Chico.
Steve does a great job in AM-drive, especially, and even
though some of the talent is voice-tracked, it's all local...

I don't know how KRDG Oldies 105.3 does in Redding, but
it's a mostly-satellite fed station - last I heard in 2005.
KCEZ has a minor presence there in Redding, also...

I agree...and it seems like Oldies-formatted stations are becoming
the MOR of today's radio...

Well, there's always the "internet" KYA... (except in morning drive.) Boss. Really Boss.

And don't leave KOOL-FM in Phoenix out the oldies...ooops...."Classic Hits" formula. They're pretty damn good under CBS, though without Bill Gardner.

Yes KCEZ or Oldies 102.1 as they call it has some of the highest ratings of any oldies station in the nation. Michaels knows his music and has done very well with almost no promotional budget, an ancient hard-drive system and voice tracking in all dayparts except for mornings. I'm surprised that a major market company hasn't tried to steal him away to program in the bigs. By the way, you can listen to KCEZ on the internet via their website.
