Is it the music or the attitude?

After reading one post below about how some people in radio "don't get Jack," (and by the way, I happen to like the stations I've heard so far) I have to ask:
Is it the music?
Is it the attitude?
Is it both, mingled and inseparable?

Would different music work with this attitude? What about 90s and Now Hot AC music with a Jack attitude?

Also, how about The River in Scranton, PA, that has adopted variety hits music without the attitude? Anyone think that will work?

My answer: If someone played the wide variety of hits without the attitude, I'd still listen. If the attitude was on a station with music I didn't like, I would not listen.

The problem with attitude...

...is you can't say "we have an attitude". It has to be assigned organically.

The problem with JACK's attitude is it doesn't carry through out the product. It's a snarky (LOVE THAT WORD) voice followed by the same commercials I hear everywhere else followed by very convincing sounding listener testimonials followed by all the same music that has been heard elsewhere at some time. The only thing new is the snarkyness. (!!!!)

If you want to see an prime example of what I would consider attitude pulled off properly, dig up a National Lampoon from the late 70's to early 80's (when P.J. O'Rourke was editor-in-chief). Every ad, comic and article was clearly focused and aimed at titilating young males. Even ads that had nothing to do with female nudity somehow managed to work it in.

music orattitude?

The only people who don't seem to get it are closed-minded radio people (or those in the biz pissed off Jack replaced their fave station). Listeners are getting it just fine and (according to Arbitron) in big numbers.

As far as I'm concerned (short of weaving personalities into the presentation),
Jack stations would be idiots to adjust their music, attitude or both so radio people get with the program.

Bottom line (with only a few exceptions) is-- IT'S WORKING!

Re: music orattitude?

Personally, I LOVE the snarky imaging. It seems to give the station "personality" without having djs. Also, how he says Jack FM, sorta sounds like he is saying Jack Affem (almost like he is gonna say, you know what). The music is also good. All in all, I wish we had even a satellite version of Jack in this area, I think it would work well.

I love the snarky imaging as well. Some consider it offensive but I find JACK's disaffected tone pitch perfect and quite cool. Plus, most of his liners are funny.

Only one out of ten listeners (that one is not a listener, I guess)
find Cogan to be annoying, etc. That's pretty decent radio odds.

And for those who think you have to have a copycat/mostly talk
on a music format morning show to be successful, Nashville's
Jack FM is also #1 25-54 mornings as well as overall. Not bad
for something so bland, boring and lifeless, huh?

You're right. Obviously the current facts show Jack is doing well. I also like the snarky liners. They're funny. Are any other Jacks number one 25-54 in the morning?<P ID="signature">______________

I also like the snarky liners on the Jack-FM's and their clones. I also love the music mix. I listen to 95.7 BEN-FM/Philadelphia, and it's basically the only station I listen to anymore. The "attitude" of the station is what sets it apart from other stations. How can people say that these variety hits stations are bland when they generally have over 1,000 song playlists? Most stations seem have been said to average 300 songs. There is a method to the madness. Every song heard is a recognizable hit from the past 30 years. I noticed that BEN-FM evenly disperses the 70s, 80s, 90s, and today's music so they aren't played back to back. While it does have a rock lean to it, they do play a fair share of rhythmic music and disperse that evenly among the other songs played.
