Is It The Rays or....

..is it the fact they are playing the Yankees this night?

Seriously...CC couldnt wait to shuttle the misbegotten Rays franchise off to 1250 WHNZ..and for good reason.

If Wade Boggs parents hadn't sired him here, there would not be a single thing to show for the last ten years of pitiful baseball on the diamond....

Tonight, we find the Rays not only on their Business home...but (gasp) on the Sports Animal..the dominating sports station in the market.

Why? To bust the chops of 1010, the Yankee Clipper?

Or is it to grab some Yankee listeners away from 1010?

Either way, lol, it smells....but then again, so does the business and so does Major League Baseball...

...actually, I think it's more of the Sports Anal Mule being full of themselves as they seem to have been lately. For some reason, they're deciding to broadcast EVERY Monday night game the Rays are involved in. This on top of 1250 already broadcasting the game.

As far as 1010 (who has strangely dropped their "Beast" moniker, btw), I think it's more upper mgmt kissing the ring of the Steinbrenner family (as I'm sure I"ve alluded to in posts past). Funny thing is, listening to the talk on that station(sporadically as it is), it's seemingly more rah-rah for the Rays than ever. I'm tempted to call the station out on being rah-rah for the Rays while still airing Yankee games, if only I had the time...

If the Lightning were worth a damn and in the playoffs we probably wouldn't have this conversation. I think it's simply a case of WDAE had nothing better to broadcast.

Don't the Rays actually buy the time from HNZ? Some sports franchises are doing it this way as it allows them to control ad revenue and editorial comment. Does anyone know if this is the case here?

I seem to recall a similar question on another topic either on this site or another one, and I believe (if I remember correctly) that is what the Rays do, or at least did as of last season...

The Rays are indeed buying time.

As for 1010 carrying the Yanks, George Steinbrenner has had his local people securing a Tampa signal for the team for quite some time. He likes to listen in the car (don't know if that is still the case as he is not getting around as much as he used to).

Why not run them? You are getting the programming for free, there is an audience for it at a time of day when your audience is usually zero (well for 1010 that is most of the day).
You might even sell an ad or two.

I am sure he can afford XM, however he would only get the hometown announcers in the home park. He wants the hometown guys all the time.

which means that we're forced to listen to Suzyn "OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!!" Waldman. Seriously, if MLB is promoting XM Radio as hard as they are for out of market games, you'd think that they'd step in for this situation.....wait, that's right, their Commissioner's too spineless to do anything like that ::)
