Is it time for Larry King to retire?

CNN is getting trounced in the ratings in prime time, and with the network's 30th birthday on June 1st, and Larry King's 25th Anniversary this summer, it might be time for Mr. King to bid farewell and for the first cable news network to overhaul their
entire lineup in the evening, nobody is watching "John King USA", "Campbell Brown", or "AC 360", any ideas on what they
should do?, as long as Fox News has Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity, and Greta Van Suestren, those three will continue to dominate
cable news at night.

Not sure. I think Larry still has some value for CNN. His marriage problems might even garner more interest!

The show has changed over the decades. Once a celebrity interview show, it has evolved into a "news-maker" show, trying to incorporate breaking news into many situations. Unfortunately, Larry is not a "breaking news" host. Perhaps he needs a "breaking" co-host? Beyond that, I could see him retiring in the next year or two.

I'll take Larry King over any of the other shows you just mentioned. I can't stand all the politics. Larrry is the one show you can tune in and it's not always political.

Larry King still is a decent interviewer. He's not as good as he's been, but that's probably because of internal pressures. The only interviewer I've ever liked as much as Larry King is Bob Costas.

That said, if you did retire Larry King, who'd replace him? And could you guarantee his/her ratings would be any better? If King isn't pulling in ratings is it him? Or is it the network?

Larry King obviously likes what he is doing and is a known commodity, as such if he has his way, he's likely to retire only after he's "six feet under." Celebrities and political leaders (on all sides) know when you want to say something and sound responsible you go to Larry King and get an interview.

GOSH! Are we watchig the same guy (the one with the suspenders)?

Softball questions, questions about the afterlife, just wierd stuff. As an interviewer my young daughter would be much better. I can't STAND him!

Larry's prime was about 15 years ago. He stinks.

I think one of the highest rated installments of "Larry King Live" in 2009 - not counting any of the Michael Jackson shows - was the "Balloon Boy" family ("we did this for the show") interview - with Wolf Blitzer. King wasn't even hosting that night. The show obviously will get its larger audiences when the breaking news story warrants it. Doesn't make a difference whether it's the guy in the suspenders in the host's chair or not.

And when it is, you are reminded by a big flashy graphic reading, "POLITICS IS KING"!

Yep and Larry will skip the meat and/or controversy, and ask about the crap. UGH!

You might have just stumbled onto something! How about Bob Costas as Larry King's replacement?
Granted, Bob's original background is sports, but that didn't stop Bryant Gumbel from doing the Today Show, did it?

Yes, it's time for him to retire.. but that won't happen.
Larry King is the biggest draw on CNN. He is showing signs of senility from time to time and does not ask good questions. It really doesn't matter. More people watch him than any other show on CNN.

They need to keep him going until that is not the case.

More people are watching "The Joy Behar Show" on their sister cable news network, HLN... What does that tell you?

It's Time for CNN to Retire

Say what you will but Larry King still has the ability to feature some interesting guests. Is he boring? Yes.

As for King retiring; it won't happen!

There were a number of news anchors, reporters, and behind-the-scenes-people who helped start CNN back in the early 1980's that lost their jobs in order to make way for King, Paula Zahn, Connie Chung, and the rest of the "big names" that the network brass was assuring advertisers would draw a larger audience. Apparently CNN executives never learned from their mistakes IE: Campbell Brown. And let's not even bother to ask why in hell someone at CNN hired Rick Sanchez. What a loser!

Also look at what CNN did to their Headline News operation. They got some "beauty queen" to anchor their morning news show while the rest of the day is spent reporting "entertainment news." (I could give a rat's a$$ about Kate Gosslin).

If anything should be retired it's CNN itself. What started out as the pioneer of cable news has turned into nothing but a visual National Enquirer.

Behold the automobile market.

Some people think the Dodge Charger is the only car in the world.
Others opt for a Lexus.
Some turn cartwheels over the mini-Morris.
With a new name, the lowly station wagon is returning.
And where I live the jazzy new 4-door crew-cab pickups rule the roost.
And turning heads where ever they go are the Toyota hybrid Prius.

Why shouldn't there be a variety of interviewers on TV? (and on radio!)

If you want hot chili peppers in your bedtime drink, be my guest.
For some of use Larry King is our smooth, slightly sweet glass of wine to end the day.

(Glenn Beck will be happy to agitate your ulcers if that is your way of ending the day.)

No ulcer agita, thanks. I enjoy Dr. Milt Roseberg on WGN "at the end of the day" and sometimes my 200 cd collection of "FM100" (Chicago beautiful music).

Sanchez is basically the only reason why I still watch CNN. He's decent and entertaining. Besides him, I watch MSNBC.

If CNN really wanted to ruffle some feathers, and get people talking about their network again, and make a name for themselves like Fox News, they should replace Larry with his friend and occassional fill-in, Bill Maher. Chances are Bill Maher has no interest in doing a five night a week show at a network like CNN when he is accustomed to the freedom allowed by HBO, but it would certainly be a polar opposite to the viewpoints over on Fox News. Plus, he already works for the company, so he could probably continue with his hosting duties over on HBO, along with the yearly comedy specials.

I'm just saying, sometimes bold, unsafe choices are what is most needed at a time like this when CNN seems desperate. They need someone who is going to say unpopular, unpolitically correct things from time to time. Since Fox News and MSNBC seem to have no problem airing "opinion" during the primetime hours, maybe CNN should just get on board and get some people to tune back to their network.

Folks give it a rest. CNN isn't about to force Larry King out. And King isn't about to walk away from a gig that pays him millions; not over something like this latest scandal.

Scandals, if anything, seem to make people more profitable. Look at that hooker who was caught with former Governor Spitzer. She's now making the rounds on TV promoting her layout in Playboy. Tiger Woods still draws people to watch golf. And Jesse James will be back on TV with some other dumbass reality show in the future.

Newton Minnow was so right about TV being the vast wasteland.

CNN is like Muzak or Lite News. It is a safe choice for car dealers and doctors offices. Fixed News and MSNBC can offend people. As for Rick Sanchez----put him in a time capsul to 1965 and he is a WMCA Good Guy.
