Is it time to update Channel 2's logo?

If memory serves me right, Channel 2 has had the same logo since the early 80s. The last time I remember them giving the logo an overhaul was back in 1981 when it dumped its "2's The One!" campaign. Anyone remember that?

I am wondering if the "2" is beginning to look dated.

Actually, they modified the box that the 2 logo sits in once or twice since the debut in 1985. A former on-air personality from WSB told me what Cox paid for that logo in 1985 and it was a lot. I actually liked the previous logo better, I don't think I saw a 2 logo like it in any other market.

I don't really like the WESH NBC 2 logo too much. It's not attractive at all. I hope when the time does come for them to change the logo out they don't use that one or one similar.

They launched the current "2" in October 1985. Looking at their ratings, a logo change isn't needed.

56% news share? Yeah, I don't think they need it.

They could put a logo drawn by a kid with a crayon and it won't effect the ratings. That being said, I did like the curly 2 that was used before this one. But I also don't watch the news just to see the logos.

They paid too much.

WFMY had a "curly 2" logo similar to WSB's although not as
rounded; I also seem to remember one on WESH that had a
flat bottom. WFMY's current "2" logo looks like a fat version of WSB's
and has the CBS eye adjoining it; WSB does not use the
lower-case ABC logo.

WSB is using the same logo it had a few years ago when I could get
the station on Primestar (before DirecTV bought it) and I have no problem
with it.

And for those who weren't in Atlanta at the time "2's the One!" was the
slogan they used to herald the switch from NBC to ABC in 1980 (ABC had
used "Still the One" a couple or three years earlier). WXIA, going the other
way, had one called "the proud new tradition": proud=NBC's slogan at the
time, "Proud as a Peacock"; new=new network; tradition=NBC's traditional
dominance in the market with Channel 2 as its affiliate (which 11 Alive hoped,
vainly as it turned out, would rub off on them).

Everybody wants to change everything and what is the point? There is no need to change something that is already working. To me, if you leave something as a logo as the same, people will always remember you, than to change and may be forgotten. Once you start changing the unnecessary, then I tune to something else.

Fix the MESSY website first. All those pop-ups and add clutter, they need to tone it down a
bit. I could see the 4th place news team doing something like that (to make an extra buck)
but in WSB's case its uncalled for and not necessary................just plain billboard clutter.

I guess it would be nice to see them change the logo, but it would simply be change for change's sake. It's not like they haven't updated the logo (it used to be rounded with stripes; today it has gradients, etc). Channel 2 is the market leader because they have a fairly traditional broadcast and a familiar look. It's comforting, like a warm blanket on a cold winter's day. Or mom's meatloaf and mashed potatoes. It works. It would be like WPVI getting rid of (or changing) their MCTYW theme. When they tried to change it, Philadelphians revolted.

On the NYC radio board there is a lengthy discussion about the 1010 WINS teletype background noise. Some are saying it is outdated. I am with Junk Junk... traditional, consistant, and familiar usually seem to be part of winning formula. That does not mean there is not some change, but mostly, successful radio and TV news operations are winners because they are familiar.

i like WSB's base logo (the golden 2 with the royal blue box). And the thing is WSB is under Cox, and if you take a look at the conglomerate's other stations like KTVU, WPXI, WSOC and WFTV, those stations also have used the same base logo for around three decades or so. The base logo (channel number) has always been the same, with some modification. KTVU has used the circle laser 2 logo for the longest and its iconic on the tv screen in the Bay Area. The only modification was the Fox logo imprint in the late 90s. Think about it now.

Here is what the logo looked like in the early 1980s for those who were not here. It looks very dated now.
