Is KFWB transmitting IBOC?

Signal sounded terrible yesterday here at the western fringe of its hamster-powered signal. Hashy.

950 OK.

1020 OK.

IBOC?

Closer in, it does not sound IBOC. Nothing on 970 or 990 in Glendale, none of the noise I hear on other IBOC signals. Tried on a Boston Acoustics Receptor and on a stock ICOM R-75.

Don't think so ... this was at my driveway where I know the noise patterns, and there was nothing on nearby stations.

It sounded like KFMB.

Clarification, please.

Did you mean (as I think you did) 980/KFWB in L.A., or 760/KFMB in S.D.?

I mean the digital hash I heard last week on KFWB/980 sounded exactly like the IBOC hash I heard several times this summer on KFMB/760. I am at the edge of both stations' usable signal, where IBOC drowns the analog signals when it is used.

I thank you for that clarification.

If I understand what you are saying, not only does IBOC cause adjacent channel interference, it prevents you from receiving the station itself clearly?

I haven't heard IBOC on KFMB, and I'm about 5 miles from their transmitter.

While listening last week to a station with IBOC the hash on each side was very loud and the center frequency with the station itself sounded very very mushy.
I had to turn the station to another channel and what a relief it was too! All the big players going to IBOC and still no radios to speak of for in car listening even for sale. When all these stations are using
IBOC I think they are going to go nuts fielding all the complaint calls when listeners can't hear their favorite stations clearly! This is a flawed
system whose time has not come.

KTNQ has been IBOC since 2004, and I do not believe there has been one call or communication about the sidebands making distant stations unreadable. This is probably because so few people listen to AMs outside the really primary contours.

A couple reasons I haven't called KTNQ to complain about their IBOC sidebands:

I can't even hardly get their primary analog center channel from where I live.

There aren't any stations on 1030 or 1010 that I regularly listen to.

I don't have their phone #.

What's KDIS's phone #? Right before sunset I can hear their IBOC on 1090 in El Cajon.

[Sorry for delay in response - was camping in mountains]

The on-channel hash in distant AM is just awful. I am simply amazed that the AM engineers of this world have not figuered this out yet.

I am 140 miles from KFMB and regularly got a great signal on 760. Once IBOC came, good bye signal.

And I do not believe (but I could be wrong) that an IBOC carrier on KBRT/Avalon on 740 was the problem.

You only hear the hash when you are on the fringe .... but how does KBRT 740 sound five miles from KFMB's sticks during the day, when the IBOC generator is on?

KBRT used to have a great signal in SD when it was KBIG-AM. I'll bet it's a goner if KFMB has their digital noise generator in the chain.
