Is Kim hot AC now?

I'm in Memphis for the weekend and I've been listening to a good deal of Kim FM. They sound almost identical to FM 100. When this shift occur? The last time I heard them (around Thanksgiving), they were more of a Jack-like station.

Looking at their playlist from yesterday, they have turned into a Hot AC. I don't think they played any songs from the 70s and they were playing several currents (Fray, Hinder etc) 7 or 8 times.

I know the ratings for Kim have been poor, but why go after FM 100? Hot AC isn't exactly doing all that great in Memphis at 100. There is no way the jukebox approach of Kim can compete with the heritage and personalities of FM 100. Curious move, but this is the same company that is giving us the Max

I wonder if they will still air 1970s AT40s on Saturdays.

They did not air a '70's version this past weekend. (How I hope this thread is not coming to fruition.)

80's version was originally aired May 18 '85 and was re-aired on Saturday night and Sunday morning.

I'm hearing more AC, but I did hear a lot of 80's Prince on Friday and some George Michaels "Father Figure" this morning.... and I was really beginning to like their mix.... :-\

I'm not going to throw in the towel in just yet....

We'll see Saturday morning if AT40-The 70's airs as scheduled. If it doesn't, can the locust swarms be too far off?

Kim played the heck out of "The Sweet Escape" by Gwen Stefani as well. I also felt like something sounded different about them when I heard them play Christina Aguilera on Friday as I was arriving in the Memphis area, though I thought they were pulling a Nine FM in suburban Chicago by playing anything. I also heard no 70s music on there, too. That made me even more aware of a possible shift.

I loved listening to the classic American Top 40 episodes. I'd love for a station down here in Jackson to pick it up.

It's definatly Hot AC

I will say one thing....

It sounds good (technically speaking)
Kim was awful sounding at first.. distorted highs and poorly encoded files....

what they are playing now sounds really good both the files and processing..

Can we just get the girl off there now? worst imaging voice ever... I still cringe every time she talks.

time for ::gasp:: personalities! ;D

Maybe, but they won't pay for staff the caliber of 100. I'm still not sure I understand the logic (if any) behind the move. FM 100 is having troubles and so they go after them? Do they want a piece of that 2.4? Or is it better to have a format buffet for the advertisers? Someone help me here...

Their playlist (available from their website) over the last 24 hours confirms the format slide / shift.

For every 80's song played there are 1-3 current / recent hits in between. Absolutely wearing out Gwen Stefani, Nickelback, Five for Fighting, Green Day, Maroon 5.

It's completely unbearable to listen to for an extended period. But then again, "The Day the Music Died" for me was in 1991 when Nirvana peaked at #6 on the Hot 100 chart with "Smells Like Teen Spirit". That was the death knell for Popular music for me.

Oh, how I had hopes for this station to do something great in Memphis.

Any chance we can blame this on "the name we shall not mention"? ;)

Did anyone notice the odd playlist two weeks prior to last weeks shift? AOR and Top 40 oddities like Stevie Wonder's "Ain't Gonna Stand For It", Asia's "One Step Closer" (not a top 40 hit), and Steve Winwood's "Arc Of A Diver." I thought this was either the best Jack-themed playlist ever or there was chaos in the programming.

Sadly, I too expected to hear AT40:The 70's yet only heard more of Stefani and Akon's "weehoo."

A silly footnote to this: I heard Maroon5's "This Love" the other day, said to myself "they could be playing the new one by them", switched to 99.7 and heard Maroon5's "This Love". DJ outro from this: "FM 100 where we play the BEST variety"

I liked Kim when it first started but now I can barely listen to it. The same thing applies to 98.1 as well (see other post)

I'm disappointed enough in the shift in programming that I'm actually posting here after lurking since Kramer left town. I'm just a listener and only started listening to Kim a few weeks ago and was really pleased with the variety of songs. I couldn't believe I was hearing Nik Kershaw on the radio in Memphis in 2007 last week. I told someone then that I felt like the station sounded like it had somehow gotten hold of my record and CD collection. I wanted to listen more just to see what the next song might be. I have loved all of the 80s tunes especially the stuff I've never heard on the whatever weekends in the past. To me this is what set Kim apart from the other stations.

I don't really dislike the songs Kim is playing now, but I didn't tune in to hear another version of FM100. At this point I don't really hear much difference. Sure, the AT40 80s version was on last weekend (which I prefer to the 70s because of my age), but there's way too much current songs in the playlist. I looked at the past 24 hours and saw they've played the new Lifehouse 4 times... not that I don't like it, but I didn't tune in to hear it over and over.

As someone who is certainly part of their target demographic, this just doesn't seem like a good move.

The CHR I worked at in the late 80's & early 90's played gave currents like 30 spins a wk and now you see stations way beyond that... Isn't up to 85...90... or even over 100 common now?

We also had a playlist of well over 1000 songs mostly AC (leaning to Hot A/C) during the day and CHR at night. Even an all 60's/70's lunchbox type show and CCM Sunday mornings.

they played a lifehouse song four times in one day? you had to look it up on the internet? whoopty f'ing dooooo

first off lifehouse sucks....second no target demo listeners is really looking that up or cares. third four times in a day is nothing.

cajuncutie you are some sort of kkamer family member, friend or really obsessed fan....most folks are not that into radio.

True, four times a day is not excessive. I see where cajuncutie is going with this. If KIM-FM is pushing more currents into the 80's-90's (um, and whatever) mix, the list is mighty short and almost identical to FM100's currents. It might not pull enough FM100 fans that haven't already tuned in to KIM. Only the next Arbitron numbers will tell 'em if they're doing the right thing.

The reason I said 4 times was excessive is that up until this recent shift, I never noticed songs being repeated at all within a single day. I'm not saying it didn't happen, just that the listeners probably wouldn't have noticed a repeat because of the variety. There no more listening just to see what they'll surprise me by playing, which is why I tuned in.

The only reason now to leave FM100 for this station is to get away from hearing the on air talent. Honestly, while FM100 isn't this way, I've found in the past that the banter on some stations here is unbearable simply because it is so bigotted. I don't think the personalities even realize they're offending anyone. People forget that racism and bigotry is more than just black and white. That is a non-issue with Kim at least for now.

I really liked the pre-Hot AC format and will miss it.
