Is KKWD the only rhythmic....

Is KKWD/Oklahoma City the only rhythmic playing Kelly Clarkson? It just doesn't fit considering the rest of that station's playlist. They should make up their mind and either go Hip-hop/R&B or go mainstream.

Speaking of Kelly Clarkson getting airplay at rhythmic....

...Here are other stations playing "Because Of You":

WWKL/Harrisburg
WGBT/Greensboro
WIBT/Charlotte
WRDW/Philadelphia
WRVZ/Charleston, WV
WLTO/Lexington, KY
KLUC/Las Vegas
WKTU/New York City

I do know they tend to play techno/dance stuff sometimes too. I really hated when they were playing Avril Lavigne - Complicated all the time. Why does Wild lean so mainstream? I remember back in the early days when at times KJ103 would sound more "rhythmic" than Wild. Plus, back then, they were the only game in town. At least now we have KVSP 103.5 on FM filling that hole, but they don't have good coverage in ALL of the metro.

I tend to favor the sound of Wild 97.9, I like to listen to it while Driving through there, I like how they surprise you with some Dance and Mainstream stuff. They tend to be a very WHITE bread Rhythmic, and usually dont play the more ghetto and less female friendly Hip Hop tracks. Another station that sounds very similar to this right now is Channel 94.1 in Omaha NB.

KQCH(Channel 94.1)/Omaha IS a Mainstream Top 40

They exited the Rhythmic arena this past Spring.

Wild is more mainstream than I think they really should be for a rhythmic, but they are nothing like Channel 94.1 in Omaha. The day Wild goes that mainstream should be the day they exit the Rhythmic arena as well and compete directly with KJ103. What effect is the new FM urban station having on Wild's ratings? I would imagine that it is drawing a great number of black listeners away from Wild.

Wild should reshape itself and become "Oklahoma's Party Station", playing a mix of more upbeat hip-hop and R&B (much of which it currently plays), and some more dance/techno tracks that you wont hear on KJ103. They should just leave out the Kelly Clarkson, Avril Lavigne, and other bubble-gum stuff that only preteen and early teen girls listen to.

Do you realize how popular Kelly Clarkson is on Adult Contemporary radio?
On Pulse Music Board on Proboards server 48, Kelly's "Because Of You" spends its fifth week at Number 1 on their personal chart compilation. A good deal of the personal charts are coming from the Male 18-34 demographic.

KKWD has long sprinkled in pop songs. A couple of years ago they were actually playing Sugar Ray, this was at a time when it was very unusual for rhythmics to play any pop whatsoever. Were going through a cycle now where it's become more common.

I think there is opportunity in OKC for a "real" rhythmic to come on. A rhythmic that is heavy on all the reaction hip hop and never plays pop. A real rhythmic on one side with CHR/Pop KJ on the other could sandwhich KKWD into oblivion. KKWD would serve no purpose as they would be too pop for rhythmic fans and too rhythmic for the pop audience. I realize the market has a (low power?) Urban, but rhythmic is more mass appeal and has more potential than Urban in a market with the demographics of OKC.

Same thing in Omaha, look how good KQCH did as a rhythmic. They quickly beat CHR/Pop KQKQ and forced them to go Hot AC. Now someone could go rhythmic and sandwhich KQCH between the new rhythmic and the markets two Hot ACs. The fact that rhythmic was #1 in Omaha proves that there is a place for the format there.

I think the problem is you have this expectation that radio stations should program to their format, when the truth is they should be programming to their LISTENER! If they are doing research (auditorium panels, online music testing, etc.) I'm sure they are seeing VERY high familiarity with Kelly Clarkson and VERY low burn rate. KYLD in San Francisco played two Kelly Clarkson songs at one point a few weeks back, and the combined spins imply that they were put in a "pack" together in Power rotation.

Think LISTENER, not FORMAT. They are on the Rhythmic panel because a certain PERCENTAGE of their currents and recurrents match the format, not because 100% do. LISTENER... not FORMAT!

Well this really boils down to what stations are REALLY caring about the listener and not the numbers. Really, most of the rhythmics playing pop/rock tracks are more towards the listener than their numbers and the format. Like what radiospasm said.....most of the ones that care about the format and numbers (*cough* ClearChannel *cough*) will stay away from it.
